Lead mech refuses pledge to flag at union meeting

EXACTLY!? Why in the hell would the Pledge of Allegiance be appropriate at a Union Meeting? What next "The Our Father" a few verses of "It's A Small World" or if Parker is invited "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall"? It is stupid crap like this that really dilutes the issues.....if an individual doesn't want to recite it SO WHAT! (Several years ago AFA was determined to take a formal position on "Right to Life" yet really didn't want to listen to hundreds of F/A's soon to be furloughed. Politics and religion have NO BUSINESS in these forums. Sing your patriotic songs at home around the fireplace and read your Bible verses to yourself.....Don't subject others to WHAT YOU BELIEVE....quite honestly I couldn't care less!).

Let me rewrite what i wrote here and be less personal , what i mean to say is that while you seem to cast those of us who love our country into some sort of catergory of relgious fanatics we are not , not everyone who is proud to be an american belives in god and not every patriot is so blinded by love of their country that they would seek to destory those rights which we hold so dear . While the act of not taking the pledge of allgeince is a simple one , it i also a profound statment . I can completely understand those who have relgious objections to the word god in the pledge , but they can still use the orginal peldge .

This is the orginal pledge for those of you who have forgotten .

I pledge allegiance to my Flag,
and to the Republic for which it stands:
one Nation indivisible,
With Liberty and Justice for all.

So what are we pledging to when we pledge to the flag ?

What do the colors of the Flag mean?
Sentimental writers and orators sometimes ascribe meanings to the colors in the flag. The practice is erroneous, as are statements on this subject attributed to George Washington and other founders of the country.

From the book "Our Flag" published in 1989 by the House of Representatives...

"On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress passed a resolution authorizing a committee to devise a seal for the United States of America. This mission, designed to reflect the Founding Fathers' beliefs, values, and sovereignty of the new Nation, did not become a reality until June 20, 1782. In heraldic devices, such as seals, each element has a specific meaning. Even colors have specific meanings. The colors red, white, and blue did not have meanings for The Stars and Stripes when it was adopted in 1777. However, the colors in the Great Seal did have specific meanings. Charles Thompson, Secretary of the Continental Congress, reporting to Congress on the Seal, stated:

"The colors of the pales (the vertical stripes) are those used in the flag of the United States of America; White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valour, and Blue, the color of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice.

(end webcite referall )

Look i'm of the opinion that when we take the plegde of allgeince we are saying to each other more than to the flag that we affirm our commitment to the freedoms we hold dear and stand firm and unified in supporting them .

. Hey i'm not saying that people should be forced to say it , but i SURE as hell am not going to just go "eh , what ever that's fine i don't care or think less of that person for not saying it "

IMHO; a person that deems it unworthy to stand for the Pledge is likely a total jackazz, and just isn't worth much thought. I'll still have to support their Right to be a jackazz though.

Well we have a confirmation that it was indeed the legendary jackass lead known in PIT Maintenance as TOWBAR.

My question is WHY the Pledge is even recited during a Union Meeting.......it's not like Unions have an unblemished, untarnished history over the years and are suddenly Sooo Upstanding Model Citizens. (As a US citizen the Pledge SHOULD be meaningful, but it's place at a Union Meeting and questioning someone for NOT saying it is an irrelevant point.)

I belive the reason they say it at unions was because back in the day unions were too closely assoicated with communisim , hence the pledge, also a greater drive within the unions to democratize them . Maybe it doesn't have a place nowadays at the meetings , but ponintg out that there is someone who won't say it, someone who doesn't share our very most BASIC views is still a relevant point .It's a point of honor , and perspective .

The fact that this man won't say the pledge happened to come out , that's because we live in a free society , and if i'm sitting in a room with someone who doesn't beleive in freedom and our way of life and find out about it , i will hold it against , much the same way i would hold it against someone if i found out they were a child molestor

like it or not our /(my) country was founded on god and I still stand and put my hand on my hart during the national anthem . It even gives me goosebumps sometimes and I am embaressed to say I didn't stand up and beat the HELL out of him for it. I have family that died for this country and your sorry ass cant stand up for the pledge how about press 2 for whatever turns you on and get the @#$% out

And by the way dell dude yes it was towbar he has no problem cashing his hud checks from the gov.

So what exactly did they die for -- the right for you to "beat the HELL out of" anyone who doesn't agree with you?

Gee . . . thanks but no thanks.

The flag is a symbol of our country. The Constitution is the very SOUL of our country.

You obviously don't know, or don't care to know, the difference. Every soldier and marine fighting and dying for our freedoms now, in the past and in the future has taken an oath to "protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic." I took it myself, and was proud to do so.

There is NOTHING in that oath that talks about the flag. History is replete with countries that demanded pledges of allegiance as a demonstration of patriotism. We all know which countries those were and are. When individuals refused, people like you were the first to react with varying levels of violence. If not restrained by the laws and freedoms we enjoy here, you would probably be doing the same thing judging from your post. People like you disgust me and every freedom loving American.

You have to believe in something these days. I take the pledge pretty seriously and always have. To each is own, but please don't put down our country, its pledge and its spirit on this thread!

I believe in the supreme law of this country and it's called the Constitution of the United States of America. Embodied within it are the first ten amendments, known to those who are paying attention, as the "Bill of Rights."

Anything, including the flag and the pledge, are secondary to the Constitution and the freedoms it guarantees....including the freedom to NOT pledge allegiance.

You are right about that Busdriver....the guy doesn't want to do the pledge...its his business....on the other hand, you can't discount the others for their passion for their flag and country. We need more with passion these days....particularly in DC where it should count the most.

God Bless America 😉

If yall want to get your guts in a twist...I spent last

weekend burning the American flag

Heres to truth, justice and the American way

I am happy to let these folks enjoy the freedoms that I do. I don't discount them, I discount their attitudes for obviously wishing they could deny these freedoms to others based on their own ill-conceived notions of what litmus test everyone should be required to pass before they are entitled to the freedoms guaranteed TO ALL by the Constitution.
