Story here
As one way to offset fuel costs, American is exploring whether to remove some galley space to put more seats on its fleet of 700 aircraft, Mr. Arpey said.

The space is available because the carrier now generally sells pre-packaged food, instead of preparing meals in flight for coach passengers.

Such a move could yield the carrier 12,000 more seats per day, potentially generating $100 million in extra revenue this year, Mr. Arpey said.

Not only would this create more seats and potential revenue it would also help reduce galley related delays. Ie. water leaks, wet carpets, etc. As it is the food served is mostly bagged anyway. Hopefully this works.

Not really you will still need some M/C galley space, with coffee makers and Ice storage.

Just what the industry needs now.. more seats for even less. Next we'll be talking about removing the seats all together and putting passengers to sleep and stacking them like bricks in the fuselage just to get more of them onboard.

From more room in coach, to more coach in the room!

Maybe they can pull a lav or two as well, can't wait, here is a bottle and a blanket!

Maybe we could pull all of the coach seats and line up benches in the cabin and then transport passengers like military troops in high capacity rapid transports.

We could give the tickets away for free, and complain like hell about the cost of fuel and maintenance.

Why the Airlines are dead set on increasing capacity, while complaining about revenue for current capacity makes one wonder what really is the game we are in here.

I believe easyJet (maybe Ryanair) have one less lav than normla on their 737s -- by charging for coffee and drinks, people drink less, need to use the lav less , so they get by with 2 rather than 3

We could remove G4 and G4B on AA MD80's and never miss them. The ovens have already been removed to save weight.
G1 and G5 have the coffee makers installed in them and they require a ton of maintenance at Light and Heavy C checks.
The Coffee makers [MAK 2000] are a pain in the ass and have about a 50% failure rate from stock[they are rotables] and leak at very high rates.
They could cater the aircraft with about 4 coffee pumps on domestic flights and do the job.[get rid of the high maintenance-high cost MAK 2000]

As someone else has said why do we want to subsidize the ticket prices of more seats and lose even more money?

At least it might be safe to drink if it came from an outside the airplane source. I for one would never drink the coffee anyway, because I've drained one too many water tanks.

Why continue to stock and serve free soda, juice. I dont get free soda or juice on a train, a movie theater or anywhere else. Juice and soda cans/bottle are available anywhere in the airport. Take off the weight and space needed for storing ice and soda in coach!

But where will the required wheel chair go?

On MD80's the wheel chair is not stored in the galleys. It is stored in the class divider lower compartment.

You still need trash space--and lots of it. It's incredible how much food people bring on airplanes these days. You would think we were going STL to SYD instead of STL to TPA.

Today on an STL-TPA turn--double-catered in coach at STL with only sodas and pretzels--we filled up 2.5 carts with trash on the two legs. And, I mean jamming the trash bags into the carts to make more space. (And, for those of you who might not be aware, there is an FAR dealing with the stowage of trash. For instance, if we run out of space in the carts, we just have to make more space. We can't stow trash bags in the lav for landing.)

The problem with not stocking free sodas, etc (or starting to charge for same) is who's gonna go first? The public EXPECTS free non-alcoholic beverages on airplanes just as much as they DON'T expect to get same at the movie theater. The first airline to start charging for sodas, etc. will be savaged in the public opinion for longer than some of us could survive.

I hear passengers (and fellow f/as) trivialize the cost of sodas/chips/paper towels/whatever. These same people will complain long and hard for what they have to pay for their personal supplies of these things at Krogers or Food Lion. The cost is trivial as long as I'm not the one bearing that cost.

The European public expected the same, and then the always entertaining Mr. O'Leary came along and successfully lowered their expectations...
B)

I've often wondered who will be the first to copy Ryanair over here--I'll bet someone will, and soon. You want a drink of anything--even water, pay up, no reclining, no window shades, ads on the seat in front of you (no tray table).
Oh, and don't forget, your flight to "Los Angeles" will actually land in Palmdale! Ditto for "Chicago" (Rockford) or "New York" (Poughkeepsie?)...

I'ts gonna happen, sooner or later!

Once there were expectations of pillows....legroom, hotpants. hot meals in coach, .....things have a way of adjusting to what isnt there anymore. I'm not suggesting selling soda and pretzels in coach. I propose not having them on at all except for f/c.
