What's new

Let me be the first!

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it, and may thoughts of work be the furthest thing on anyone's mind for a few days.

Dear TWU members, Please recall that, if AA was not there to employ you, most of you would be working at the 7-11 for $4.99 an hour. Thank your employer... last time I checked, 7-11 staff are not able to enjoy TWU priviliges...

Love...

Gerard? Is that you? I don't need a raise, as long as I can kiss your ass. Best wishes for a prosperous new year!

Aint that the truth!!

Truth?

Ever wonder when someone tells you one thing and they pretend to believe what they are telling you is the truth they act ignorant when you show them that they were wrong? The twu is like that. The twu has for decades generated and sang from the mountain tops various slogans which have been shown to be empty lies. But why should the twu care? After all they are actually sitting at the top of the mountain because that is where people who are unaccountable sit. From up on high the view is always good and nothing ever bad happens to you. Just like a twu International Appointed officer.
From atop the twu mountain slogans such as “The best is yet to come!” has reverberated down the halls of the appointed with many a grin and hardy laugh because the twu international officers know this is true… but only for themselves NOT the membership. How is this possible? Quite simple actually. The twu international officers, who are appointed no less, NEVER take a pay cut when the membership does so the best really is yet to come for them because they have nothing but pay raises in front of them. Yet the membership knows these are empty words.
Like the chant of Gregorian Monks the twu would sing “Shared Sacrifice – Shared Gain” but they would know full well these words did not apply to themselves because they are insulated from any form of sacrifice. It is the dues paying membership that must accept and live with reduced pay and benefits NOT the appointed ones!
“Change From Within” would be mouthed by the twu international faithful pretending once again that when their lips are moving they are speaking the truth. But yet again their words are empty because the twu pretends that change from within is possible but ONLY if the twu is in control of the change. The membership wants change but the twu runs from this change because they are not part of it.
The twu international is known for empty slogans and that has gotten the membership where? The twu says a lot but do they say the truth? They do not tell you they are democratic where all union officials are elected and are recallable. They do not tell you how much they make and that you have no say in how much they make because they are unaccountable. Why would the twu international tell people that cuts in pay and benefits are necessary to save the company while they are untouchable?
The time has come to ask ourselves are we better off with an organization with a track record like the twu’s or are we better off taking control of our own profession? If you have signed an AMP Authorization card speak to a coworker who hasn’t yet. If you haven’t signed one yet ask an organizer and help bring democracy and accountability to our craft and class.

A Christmas Story

Christmas time is once again coming at us like a speeding sleigh. As usual this time of year is filled with typical characters from years past. There is our “Scrooge” who is once again being played by American Airlines. I picture “Scrooge” going back with the Christmas Spirit and being shown how C.R. Smith treated his employees and “Scrooge” laughing at Mr. Smith’s principles. Then the Christmas Spirit takes “Scrooge” to the present and showing him how down trodden and disrespected his employees are and “Scrooge” laughing at all the millions of dollars that he has stolen from his employees. Finally, Christmas Spirit takes “Scrooge” to the future and shows him an airline that ranks dead last in all of his precious DOT rankings but “Scrooge” only laughs because he continues to line his pockets with sacrifices made by his employees. In this particular carol “Scrooge” eventually comes to realize that his laughter only prolongs the inevitable from happening, it doesn’t stop it. Greed is never rewarded! It only condemns.

Another season favorite is “The Grinch” who once again is portrayed by the TWU International. “The Grinch” simply can’t stand seeing anyone enjoy Christmas. No, no, no! All presents must be taken away! Vacations – GONE! Double time – GONE! Paid Lunch – GONE! Hourly wages and benefits – GONE! I can see it now… “The Grinch” sitting on top of a sleigh piled high with our sacrifices while it glows with glee! In this story there is no heart that beats ever so slightly with principles of doing what is right. There is only greed! “The Grinch” cares only for “The Grinch”! He knows that the membership has no control over it, and cant stop him.

There is also the perennial favorite of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” with our very own Senior VP of Human Resources playing the part of Lucy. While Lucy holds the football encouraging Charlie Brown, (AA employees, aka “bricks”), to kick the ball. Of course Charlie can trust Lucy. Behold! Lucy betrays Charlie and yanks the ball right out from under him because that is what Lucy does.

Now these examples of Christmas Season stories have for all too long played over and over within our collective careers. As with all things wished upon we can have not only better Christmas Seasons but also better futures. During the time we spend with our families, friends and coworkers take a moment to reflect on the ability to put a very valuable gift underneath our Christmas Trees. This gift is actually two gifts in one. They are democracy and accountability and the best thing is we can all enjoy them. This gift is AMP. Sign an AMP Authorization card and let’s give “Scrooge”, “The Grinch” and “Lucy” a Happy New Year!

On behalf of the AMP Steering Committee we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
