LIVING IN PIT

Living in PIT....Good areas are in Beaver County. Lower taxes for sure. Allegheny County taxes are thru the roof. Hopewell TWP, Beaver area, Chippewa, Center TWP, would be my picks. But with a little commute down RT22, West Virginia is 20 min away. Twice the house for half the price and lower taxes. Also across the river in Ohio is Steubenville, some nice older homes. PA taxes you for everything. Hope this helps.

The Ohio side is actually cheaper than West Virginia, tax wise. Ohio has a law in which taxes can only be approved by the voters (think that is the way it works, for the most part). Problem is people don't want extra taxes and you need extra taxes for roads, schools, etc. Roads and schools there are old and shabby. Steel mills still operate there and air quality can be very poor in areas. Asthma rates and chronic bronchitis for children and adults are extremely high. Schools are very old and some are crumbling. People there are great and will take you back to the America of the old days. High school football is a religion and the whole year is spent for those months in the fall when teenage boys learn to whack into eachother at full force.

Where are the good areas of PIT to live in? And are they close to RIDIC?

Imperial/Findlay Township. Close to the airport and very nice.

Center Township in my book..

Great Schools, reasonable home prices, 16 miles from RIDC park, hardly any traffic, plenty of shopping. You can buy a 3 bedroom house with an acre or more for under 150K.

Great place to live. I lived there for 17 years and if I ever have to go back to PIT or lose my job I would move back there in a heartbeat. I'm not even from Pennsylvania!

Taxes are not to bad. I paid 1700 a year on my house and that included my home owners insurance. Local tax is the standard 1% of earnings and the sales tax is 6%. Beaver county provides plenty of services. Rubbish removal, $20 a month so you can't beat that.

There isn't a day that goes by when I don't think of chucking it all in and moving to Pittsburgh. People there are the best in the world. My family is constantly bugging me about moving back. Always easier said than done.

Comming from living on top of Mt. Washington with the beautiful view of the city, all the places mentioned can't be called Pittsburgh or you would be paying Pittsburgh taxes. Everyone wants to claim to be from "Pittsburgh" but does not want to pay the "Pittsburgh" taxes. All these outlying areas are not even suburbs. They are country. Nothing in most of those area but Krispy Kreme and a Walmart. Cranberry with all its traffic and congestion may be of interest moreso than other areas for what they have to offer there. All these places are really nice and have been to them all throughout my life but they are not Pittsburgh. sorry.

Cranberry Township, it's in Butler County (save a lot on taxes compared to Allegheny County). Great access to downtown (20 minutes away...45 minutes to the airport) it's at the intersection of the Pennsylvania Turnpike hop right on. Schools are excellent and the area is growing like a weed. Need proof,we have our own Krispy Kreme! LOL

Travelpro72, have you been up here since they changed the turnpike and 79 interchanges? Traffic isn't as bad as it used to be.

"Pittsburgh" ISN'T all that........trust me! I find the suburbs are a big improvement over what is nothing more than an old, industialized dying city that is trying to revitalize itself in the modern era. I have lived ALL over the country and have never seen so many OLD buildings (literally on top of each other) and many of them should have been bulldozed years ago. It's livable but certainly NOT one of MY favourites.....sorry yunzers, IT's JUST NOT ME! 😉

If you are looking for something close to RIDC I recomend Robinson Township....great school district (if you have kids), great shopping, great eating, etc...

Are you looking to rent or to buy?

Malikie,

Left the Burgh 6 years ago. The weather I never got used to. Cloudy seemingly all the time. Check out link below.

Your handle is close to one of my favorite verses, Malachi 3:10 about testing God. Good luck and welcome to the board.

Thank god you left then.

Pittsburg might be old but it sure has culture. The Art Institute in Pittsburgh is the best in the country and the first. My Dad and my son both graduated from there. The arts survive in Pit. The William Penn Hotel is the best!!! Each and every room seems like a suite. The food there is great and the atmosphere is so very grand. You can have coffee on a couch next to Peter Faulk or Sharon Stone while they're making movies there--movie producers have their offices there--or have breakfast at the table next to the Governor--Go Lynn Swann.
Concerts there of every type of music are a plenty.
Great sports teams--Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates!! Go Steelers!!!
My Florida born son went to school there and just loves the city. Lots for everyone of every age group to do.
And by the way==I understand there's no tax on clothing in Pit. We used to fly in just to shop at the airport cause there was no taxes on clothing.

there are pluses and minuses to any city...pgh isn't that bad.lots of cultural activities....besides pittsburgh was/is known as the melting pot.
and for another reason...i like this area:
