Low fares help US Airways June traffic

US Airways Inc. filled more seats in June and said travelers were responding favorably to its new low-fare program in Philadelphia and Washington.

US Airways, which is based in Arlington, Va., and dominates service at Pittsburgh International Airport, said it filled 81.6 percent of its seats last month, a 3 percentage point increase from June 2003. The country's No. 7 airline said that was the highest passenger load factor for any June in its history.

US Airways added that it had a second quarter load factor of 78.9 percent, which the carrier also described as a record. It was a 3.5 percentage point gain over the second quarter of 2003.

Meanwhile, US Airways said its GoFares program was receiving "positive" customer reaction.

US Airways introduced GoFares in Philadelphia, site of its No. 2 hub, in May as a tool to compete against Southwest Airlines. GoFares debuted in Washington in mid-June.

US Airways said its passenger load factor in Philadelphia was 85.2 percent in June, compared to 81.6 percent system-wide, and the company attributed the difference to travelers attracted by the GoFares.

US Airways said it expects revenue from its mainline passenger operations in June to be 2 or 3 percent higher than June 2003.
