Now that most airlines are recovering from the financial morass of the early 2000's, a period of time in which most of the airlines shucked their pension plan responsibilities and obligations over to the taxpayer via the PBGC, I believe that each airline that benefited from this shucking of responsibility should be made to oversee these obligations once again.
This shucking of obligation had its desired affect in aiding in their recovery and now most of the airlines that were not viable then are now set to make millions each quarter.
It is not right to force the taxpayer to continue to pay for such obligations.
It is not fair to allow airlines to benefit from a permanent handing over financial responsibility to the tax payer and to allow other airlines to suffer financially for meeting their commitments rather than evading their commitments.
To allow airlines to get away permanently with such financial slight of hand is to invite similar action in the future, over and over again.
It weakens the industry and our free market playing field rather than strengthening it.
If these airlines are to depend on the taxpayer every time they are painted in the corner why go through the facade of having a free market playing field? Why not have state sponsored flag carriers and state sponsored feeder networks?
Com'on make these guys pull their weight!
They (the airlines) negotiated these plans, (supposedly in good faith), not the taxpayer.
