More 787/737/A350 media blather

Sounds like another few weeks, perhaps early June before an annocement.

It really sounds like they want the 737-900ER, so will the better narrow body be enough to sway the order to Boeing? One other note that intrigued me was this comment
The 787-8 would be a good replacement for the older 767s in the US Airways fleet, he said, while the bigger A350 would be a good replacement for the A330-300s.
Could that be a indicator that they actually might consider a split order? It sounds like the 787 would come online sooner and could quickly replace the 767's while the 350 would come around later in time to replace the newer 330's

What are the chances that US would equip and certify the 737-900ER for ETOPS to do the PHX Hawaii routes?

I would say the chance is zero. The range of the 737-900ER is 3200 nm and thats with 2 auxiliary tanks and the 757-200 3900nm. The 757 is already restricted on certain days out of PHX.

Re the 739 to Hawaii remember that both ATA and Aloha fly the 738 and 73G respectivally out of several Calif airports to Hawaii including the short runway at SNA. I realize PHX is further east than Calif but still, u never know.

On another point I personally prefer flying on the A320 family than the 73G family and I no comfort level is even a stronger differance on the flight deck. But unless the new 321's already on order have significantly higher rated engines and MTOW than the current ones I just can't see how we can not order the 739ER for transon flying and especially high demand routes out of LAS where the 321 can't seem to cut the mustard in it's present form.

If I where running the show I would make the entire narrow body order 739ER's and since this is supposed to be a 733/734 replacemet aircraft let many of the 319's and 320's currently doing long hauls out of PHX and LAS plus other west coast markets replace the 733 and 734 and the new 739's replace the current East transon flying Airbusses and west long haul flying out of HOT airports in PHX and LAS that could use the boost in capacity.

Again my two cents.

Aloha tried to make it LAS to the Islands with there 737's but the plane didn't have the legs and a fuel stop was needed every time inbound and outbound.

Maximum range: 3,200 nautical miles (5,925 km) - two-class layout, 2 aux. tanks

Total nautical miles from Phoenix nonstop to Hawaii cities:

2917 nm to Honolulu - Honolulu International Airport (HNL)
2979 nm to Kauai - Lihu'e Airport (LIH)
2860 nm to Kona - Kona International Airport (KOA)
2844 nm to Maui - Kahului Airport (OGG)

But other the 737-700ER is a Boeing Business Jet-inspired airplane, designed for long-range commercial applications. The airplane features the fuselage of the commercial 737-700 and the wings and landing gear of the larger 737-800. The high-performance derivative can fly up to 2,145 nautical miles farther than the current 737-700. With up to nine optional auxiliary fuel tanks and optional Blended Winglets, the 737-700ER is capable of flying up to 5,510 nautical miles."

I think the problem is each manufacturer wants a combination order (wide and narrow bodies) but clearly, that is not what the management wants or this order would have been placed by now.

Why would anyone expect me to be happy with that? It is bad enough to fly 757s to Hawaii when you can fly widebody aircraft on other airlines. Flying 737s to Hawaii is what you do when you aren't serious about service.

I guess I just answered my own question with that last sentence.

Well said. Sounds like a good home for our B-767s.

Aloha and ATA both fly different 737 variants to the Islands and their service standards exceed those of USAirways by leaps and bounds.
