US Airways launches Phoenix fare sale

US Airways Group Inc. is offering lower fares between Phoenix and a number of U.S. cities.

Since lower yields have usually been the harbinger if future cutbacks, does this foreshadow further draw down of the West PHX routes?

For the sake of all concerned; I certainly hope not, and I think it precipitous at best, to assume any such from some fare wars in any case.

don't forget United had a $146 r/t fare sale out of Salt Lake. You could fly as far as Boston and Florida on that fare.

does that mean United is at risk of pulling out of SLC or reducing?

Those fares are just about the stupidest things to come out of Tempe in a while.

We can't haul chickens at those fares.

Someone needs to slap the #### out of the idiots in Tempe.

WN is showing a 151.00 one way Business Select fare PHX/LAS for a 9/5 departure date....

I'm willing to bet it is a southwest sale that US is matching.

The press always assumes that if a carrier has low fares they must be the only one.

Remember, Scott (or was it Travis) said that it costs $299 per pax *just in fuel costs*. So these PHX fares will just be raking in the bucks, especially PHX-NYC at $258 r/t.

Wait a minute. I'm confused. If WN is charging $151 one-way for a distance of less than 300 miles (by car), and LCC is charging $258 round-trip for a flight 2000+ miles, I would say that LCC is more than just matching a WN fare.

Also, let's none of us forget that WN manages to make money at those fares. None of us seem to be able to duplicate that feat.

$151 is a WN business select fare. That is hardly their cheapest fare. Trust me it is a southwest sale match as for the pHX NYC it is no longer there it was probably a jetblue fare originally. Bottom line some fares carriers put out there are not because they want to.

Sometimes it is because they have to.

We will be closing a few more stations out west and continuing to lay off out west. we need to clean the region out

With Phoenix being viewed as a sort of leisure market (I might be wrong) do you think there is a possibility in the phx base being closed??? From what I've heard the amount of flying that was reduced will not be coming back...keeping that in mind why not just move everything West to PHL.

D/P did say that the hold up with the FA contracts are the pilot issues...if I remember correctly that if it goes on the company may seek to complete the fa contracts without the pilots.
[***NOTE: Please do not ding me if this is not a word for word transcription. I know how A. Retentive some of you are]

I think it would be ironic if US completely abandoned PHX and LAS... It would certainly give pause to people who suggest that AWA "saved" US...perhaps the purchase of US saved AWA by allowing them to abandon their price-war hubs and retreat back into the east.

I'm all for closing PHX and LAS entirely. They can't compete on any effective level in these markets and haven't for a long time. You've got to go where the money is being made and going head-to-head all day long with Southwest is just not a good way for an airline with US' cost structure to succeed.

if parke closes the west, he will have very many unhappy people, parker promised to the west that he will take care of the awa employees! Many west people hold him to it as well, if he does close the west he will have many upon many people upset at him and want to take shot at him.

More propaganda to return the East to it's usual position of having no presence west of PIT.

We can return to the high cost east only routes-wait didn't we do that before?

Oh yeah that saved our bacon from 2BKs.

East, as long as I have worked for them can't seem to turn all these high yielding fares into gold- and couldn't save PIT-especially now with WN's presence.

How do you lower costs-spread them out-BB taught me that one.
