More West Cut Coming?

It wouldn't be the first time USAir(ways) turned tail and ran from the west coast and SWA.

As far as Parker "promising" to protect the AWA employees, that's meaningless. Parker himself said in the Aug 28 PHX Pilot Crew Meeting that his job is to protect the corporation, and he would be remiss in his responsibilities if he didn't always do what is best for USAirways. He said he was sorry that some of his decisions were hurting people (maybe he was sincere, maybe not, but that point is moot.) Nevertheless, he said he will do whatever is necessary to keep the company sustainable.

Personally, I doubt that he would ever close PHX as a hub. But nothing surprises me anymore at this company except for the occasional good news.

I think it would be ironic if US completely abandoned PHX and LAS... It would certainly give pause to people who suggest that AWA "saved" US...perhaps the purchase of US saved AWA by allowing them to abandon their price-war hubs and retreat back into the east.

I'm all for closing PHX and LAS entirely. They can't compete on any effective level in these markets and haven't for a long time. You've got to go where the money is being made and going head-to-head all day long with Southwest is just not a good way for an airline with US' cost structure to succeed.
I definitely see PHX and LAS dwindling down to nothing. The writing's on the wall.

I have noticed a 757 on PHL-LAX, PHL-PHX for DEC 19. Also West has a Flight,
Flight 29, PHL-ORD-PHX. These are just a few that I checked out as to I am
reloading my programs in my new PC.

This just isn't a US Airways thing. AA bought AirCal in the 80's and the flying became marginal or money losing with the downturn in the early 90's. The same thing happened again with the routes AA gained from Reno, post 9/11.

Alaska and UAUA are exception. Alaska has a significant portion of the network in markets with little or no competition and UAUA has maintained a large presence because of their strong Asian network launching from the West Coast but domestic flying in the Western US has historically been the first to fly into the red during economic troubles.

Shrinking the airline to become just a super sized regional doing the north-south thing on the east coast doesn't seem like a strategy that has been proven successful before. If LCC really follows through with the cutbacks and ditches PHX and LAS then that is terrible news for the sustained health of the company in a high fuel price market. After all how many other major airlines have comprehensive route networks without a hub west of CLT?

How is it that you speak so authoritatively on the west's revenue condition? Do you work in accounting, marketing or in management somewhere? Are you aware that prior to the "merger" that AWA had three successive quarters of profit competing against SWA in PHX and LAS? Of course you are all for closing PHX and LAS in order to eliminate all of those pesky people standing in the way of your ambition. Greed at its very best. Jesus must be ashamed.

The bottom line as stated by Dougie a couple weeks ago: PHX and LAS are primarily leisure markets. Demand in leisure markets has dropped significantly.

If we can deploy our aircraft and resources to stronger markets then we should absolutely do so.

If it were not for the "minimum number of aircraft" restrictions that exist in the West contracts(the East has similar restrictions), the cuts out West would probably be a lot greater than they are.

That is being talked about now by the union to give relief to the company out west.

Whats the union stance? get rid of the 737's and outsource to more RJ's! Now where have we seen this show before?

I hope no relief is offered when the company is in violation of scope on "large" SJ's as it is...

I don't know the specifics, but I gather 93 is the MAX number of said RJ's in the system....(thats Mesa 900's and Republic 175's)...

If the company is over the scope limits (or about to be) I say pull the capacity out via those RJ's....surely somebody is looking into this....right?

Why don't you ask the Union?...instead of making up and posting yet more meaningless BS? 🙄

EastUS says this is "meaningless BS" can you expand on your statement little for him? I guess he doesn't know whats going on.

Union states in CBA that anything over 72 seats is mainline work.

Having had the opportunity to work with east folks at my station, I feel that I can say this: They are truly the most hateful people I have ever worked with. To read this thread and many like it and with my daily work activities, I am now one truly depressed pup. I read bobbie with the "Jesus can set you free" talk and her hatred of everyone out west and then I get to work and have my co-workers tell me that they can't wait for the west people to get furloughed before November. Then there are the cruel pranks and harassment they deal out. You can't leave anything laying out as it will be stolen. They don't want it or need it; they just don't want you to have it. The whole thing is just making me sick.

And before you say, "If you don't like, then leave.", I am looking elsewhere now. This merger cannot and will not work. I have seen enough.
