Not as excellent as you may think. The number of deaths by on-the-job accident for pilots an engineers in an average year are approximately equal. Granted, there are more engineers, so the rate is lower, but this ignores long-term effects such as those caused by prolonged chemical exposure, etc. The main difference is in the visibility of aircraft accidents. You''ll hear about those for days, weeks, or months, whereas the average industrial accident is barely mentioned.

The fact is that every job has its own risks. If pay were based on this, cab drivers, loggers, and farmers would be amongst the highest paid professions in the country. However, pay is more often based on the skill or training required, along with the availability of people willing to do the job. During the internet boom, CS and EE majors were in scarce supply, so pay soared. Now there''s an abundance, and pay has sunk.

The fact is that pilots are professional positions and should be paid as such, but that does not equate to salaries such as the author of the article was advocating.
