Please clarify trip7. By "oil fired", are you counting coal as well in your 1%? If you do not, please substanciate your 1% figure. "Coal fired" electrical generation in the USA is top dog as of now. I'm not trying to argue, just want to make sure I see where you may be coming from.

No, I'm not counting coal since its not the same thing as oil. Forty four pecent of power generated in the US comes from coal powered plants.

You know that the answer lies not in any one method of producing power. Rather it resides in the hearts and minds of those we elect. What is required is the DESIRE to become self sufficient energy wise.

Politicians won't go for it because it requires not only DESIRE but RESOLVE to see it through election cycle after election cycle. We don't have those types of people in Congress as everyone in Congress can be bought.

I have to say 777...I feel about the same on this as you.
About the only thing I found that is used is natural gas fired turbines that we import some gas. I'm sure there are some fuel fired plants but I don't think very many at all.At least not enough to 'cut our dependence on foreign oil'.
Producing our own supplies would help that....But noooo.....

I like it too but I’m not convinced the Obama Administration is committed to a nuclear powered America. I don’t recall Obama ever even mentioning nuclear power as one of his “green jobs†initiatives during his campaign nor do I remember members of the progressive party asking why clean, safe nuclear power wasn’t part of his plan. Now it’s “a very sound investment in our futureâ€. Conservatives have always felt nuclear power was “a very sound investment in our futureâ€.

Only thing that will give relief, from dependance on foreign oil, sooner than "Green" tech , is Drilling Now and building new refinerys !

No one ever said you can't work on "Green" technology on the side and not bankrupt our country in the mean time !

Added drilling will only delay the inevitable and why would oil companies want to build new refineries? Slightly reduced capacity and less oil being drilled means higher profits for them. I do not believe that if the oil cartel wanted to have a refinery they would be denied. They are doing just fine with their record setting profits and they are not interested in jeopardizing that.

The part I "don't get" i how we have put a man on the moon 50 years ago but we still drive an internal combustion engine that can only break 50 MPG if its on a skate board. I don't buy that. Had we been in vesting in alternate fuels/technology for the past 40 years we would not need to have this discussion right now.

I do not necessarily believe it is a conspiracy al la Area 51 and aliens but I do believe there is a concerted effort by various groups to milk this money train for as long as possible. I am not convinced given the brain power of people here in the US and abroad that we could not have come up with alternatives by now. I believe we are being played for suckers. We could have put the oil cartels out of business yeas ago had we wanted to.

Perhaps inevitable was the wrong word. My opinion is that the people in the US/world only do things when they are forced to do so by circumstances and usually by that time it is too late. When fuel hit $5 a gallon, people started driving less and the 'urgency' for more fuel efficient vehicles was very palpable. Now that fuel is less expensive, people are not concerned with efficiency and they are content driving their inefficient vehicles.

By drilling for more oil and making fuel even less expensive, only delays the point when we will be forced to come up with a better solution. Forced solutions are never as good as non-forced ones. Look at health care for an example. The system has been breaking for some time and now we have come to the point where it needs to be fixed but the price tag is more than we can afford. Had we been trying to fix it before it broke, the cost would be less.

We either make a serious effort to break our addiction to oil or it will be broken for us. Pay a little now or a lot later.

For once in our history it would be nice to look ahead beyond tomorrow.

The gist of the article you posted seems to be "We don't really know". Just as with the climate, I prefer to error on the said of caution. There is no easy button and there is no do over. We get one planet and one shot. If we break it, we bought it. I do not understand what people have against hedging their bets and conserving.

As for nukes, I tend to shy away from anything that has a lethal half life measured in tens of thousands of years. Given the other possibilities to provide power, I think nukes ought to be the last resort. I think Solar and wind are where its at.
