USAIRWAYS IS STARTING UP MIA TO LAS IN APRIL ON A 319, NOT AN HP FLIGHT, WISH THEY WOULD ANNOUNCE THIS ROUTE IN A PRESS RELEASE

I was just sitting here thinking the same exact thing. Why would usairways not start a flight to vegas from FLL with all the traffic they have comming in there. It would be a great connecting opportunity from the more southerly states. Hmmm.

Well yeah you have a point. I just looked and the 2 HP&US flights leave within like 10 min. of each other. This is so weird, isnt there somewhere else that we can be using these planes.

This is HP style. Open a new route; never advertise it; then pull it 9 months later just as it is begining to profit.

The problem with FLL wasn't lack of advertising it was lack of space to operate adequately.

I am very suprised by this new route.

MIA has been decimated in recent years. Maybe with the FLL failure, they will consider building MIA back up a little bit? Resuming MIA-BWI and MIA - Bahama islands would be a start. And don't tell me about Air Midwest closing their FL bases - throw a Dash down there.

Could it be that these are the first HP flights to hop the fence onto the US certificate? I am also surprised that they didn't/don't announce LAX-RDU, but that's a whole other story.

With regards to why FLL was chosen over MIA, the main factor was landing fees. The fees for a 733 at MIA are/were way more than that of a 733 at FLL at the time they decided to ramp it up.

While US's gates at MIA Terminal H are underutilized and while there may have been plenty of room at Terminal F in MIA during the day for the international arrivals following UA's reduction, and more *Alliance connectivity to Europe and South America, Broward County let their mouths write checks their butts couldn't cash regarding expansion of customs and immigration at FLL T4. As of today nothing they promised has been done to T4. As a result, US cut the marginal routes.

Spirit, which is housed in T4, expanded to many proposed US markets thanks to Baldenza who knew the plan for FLL. Even though they are private and have a mostly new Airbus fleet, they are having growing problems, and some people say they might not be too healthy either.

Then there's the issue of AA at MIA, and US not wanting to piss them off any more than they did at FLL. We all know what lengths AA will go to to protect their turf.

Was told by mgt that those flts(LAS-MIA LAS-FLL) was being used by the east side to free up the 757 for the incease in the Hawaii Flights in april and that the west side will be doing some flights out of Philly(PHL-SEA).

Would you really expect a press release for the adding of one flight on a route that a carrier already serves?
