"New" US Airways hurting WN in PHX?

I thought it was interesting to note that when WN announced their expansion plans for the beginning of next year, there was absolutely NO expansion in PHX. That has to be the first time that that has happened in MANY years, if ever.

Recently, they added DTW, BUF, PVD service and extra frequencies accross the board. But not so much as an increase in frequency could be found this time around.

It is my theory, based on what I have heard from friends, family, and random people in the PHX area, that the "New" US Airways is to blame. Prior to the merger, people flew whoever was the cheapest, had the best time, etc., and oftentimes the WN effect of simply booking on WN because you think there is no way that anyone else could be cheaper (which is often false!) Now I have found that people make a concerted effort to fly HP/US because they can actually get some worth and usage from their FF miles. While the HP program offered preferred status, if you weren't a serious traveller you could only really fly to places in North America on FF miles. My father, for one, used to fly WN almost exclusively (all business trips) and now is a HP/US Chairman's Elite for the second year in a row flying on high yielding tickets. Other people said they used to be indifferent to who they flew, but now purchase HP/US over WN because of Caribbean, Hawaii, and Europe options. Many people have also changed their credit cards from AA, DL and United (they were using them for the points and intl travel) to US. I know good family friends that used to do all intl travelling on AA, but now switched to HP/US and bought full fare First/Envoy tickets for 4 this summer PHX-MAD, BCN-PHX. That's serious revenue that HP/US was not making before.

So I wonder if WN is starting to feel the heat in PHX? They used to be nearly neck and neck with HP at PHX and were always adding service, but I wonder if the FF program and newfound support for the hometown airline is putting a damper in WN's PHX plans? Has anyone else found this happening at other stations, or is WN still putting a large hole in the US market share at other airports around the country?

Don't delude yourself. WN currently has bigger fish to fry then PHX, plus I don't know how much extra capacity they currently have in PHX.

Why is it so easy to tell a westie from an eastie? Because westies have gotten along with WN folks for a long time and, IMO, they mutually respect one another. Easties just seemingly want revenge for everything they felt WN did to them and don't seem to remember that WN can turn into the 800 lb. gorilla if they so choose.

I was out in PHX a few weeks ago and arrived early for my return flight. I chatted with several of the friendly counter agents and with one I asked a few questions about US vs WN at PHX. This is based only on what he told me so I don't know if it is fact but he said even though US/WN have a similiar number of flights the WN Ticket Counter is 1/3 the size of US's. Even though I was there at busy time the US counter seemed to be pretty efficent and well staffed with lines moving quickly! I have read numerous times about long counter lines at WN in both PHX and LAS !

I think more WN passengers use online check in and avoid the ticket counter. It's the best way to insure receiving the coveted "A" boarding pass.

I'm getting more disenchanted with the public at large evaluating anything. Crappy popular music, crappy tv shows, I just rented a Toyota Camry - the car everyone talks highly about and was just named Motor Trend car of the year, and it felt like disposable Walmart plastic crap. I've sat on those cheapo $299 sofas when I was younger looking at my first apartment that felt more comfortable. When I explain no interline ticketing to friends and coworkers, terrible FF program to people they just look clueless.

I don't think people know quality, they just know cute ads. It's time for US to put out some cute ads.

WN lines at PHX in the morning are horrendous. Passengers are usually pretty hot under the collar by the time they get to the counter.

From Article..Hedging contracts mean that market prices don't directly impact the bottom line. UAL has hedged about 34% of its exposure over the next couple of quarters, a step that limits the gains if oil prices drop and provides relief if prices soar

I thought someone posted on here that you can't hedge while in BK?

...Tuna,

you better get out a little...maybe read a newspaper, get off the porn sites... ;)

UAL exited CH 11 early 2006.

Also, as long as the bankruptcy judge agrees, companies can, and did, hedge in CH 11.

Hey 700 I need some help here how do I twist and wiggle out of this one?

Oh wait I know heres a stab at it.

Well I did read somewhere that airlines in BK couldn't hedge fuel. I never said UAL was still in BK. Don't put words in my post.

How was that? Soft you are quite right. Good thing I can still type with foot in mouth.
