No carryons allowed on flights from/connecting in UK

From the BBC:

Abdul Waheed, 21, was arrested at a house in Hepplewhite Close, High Wycombe.

He had changed his name from Don Stewart-Whyte about six months previously, according to neighbours.

You miss my point. You have a passenger named something like "Abdul Waheed", you put all those "S"s (sighnifying extra screening) all over his/her boarding pass, no matter what he/she looks like!

How would you have responded to the threat if you were in charge?

I don't really understand why some people are having a problem with erring on the side of caution.

You have a threat to blow up airliners over the atlantic using explosive liquids and an electronic device. So you just let all liquids and electronics on and hope today isn't the day they strike?

What do you think would be a reasonable policy?

Becaue it's erring far too much on the side of caution. I'm certainly not planning to fly as long as my only options are: A: Check a bag (haven't done that in about a decade, even for 10-day trips) or, B: Have to buy toothpaste and deodorant every single place I fly to, throwing most of it away because I can't bring it back.

No thanks. I'll wait until the current idiocy/hysteria subsides, if it ever does...

Ok, so the next bunch of terror wackos will keep/adopt unassuming Anglo-Saxon names and avoid name-based SSSS...

Fixer, it's been several years since I had to fire up my laptop for security in the USA.

I agree with your sentiment - my nine year old daughters should have been able to demonstrate the safety of their chapstick by applying it to their lips and the safety of their water by drinking some, but the thugs in charge (Chertoff and Hawley) would have none of that.
FWAAA, guess you don't come thru TUL very much, for the most part, the TSA here has everyone start up their laptops, randomly but they still do it, which brings up a question, Why are things done differently at other stations, some places have the metal detectors set on very sensitive/I have a metal hip so I set the detector off in TUL/ but it won't set it off in several other stations I go thru, and why is it that the hand held detectors don't register when they go over my hip, just a few questions that maybe someone can answer.

Except.....it's been reported the bottles had false bottoms, hence drinking from it would prove nothing.
Got me there Ozcobber, guess I should have clarified myself a bit better, I was refering to the "HIGH DOLLAR" styrofoam coffee cups that can be bought at the airport shops and clear bottles of water.

How would you have responded to the threat if you were in charge?

I would have alerted all airlines to be vigilant for lav assembly of explosives.

Yes, I just let all liquids and electronics on board, just like the day before. Here's one article partially confirming my skepticism:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14320452/

The idiot thugs at the TSA banned (and continue to ban) beverages, including water. Water, in freakin AUGUST. IMO, anyone thinking that's a good idea is just a little too eager to buy into Chertoff's fantasies. A little skepticism is healthy.

Of course, easy for you to be smug about the Terrorism Support Agency's outrageous behavior: Flight crews are, of course, EXEMPT from this idiocy.

It is very easy to be a Monday Morning Quaterback.

We should all keep in mind that the authorities in charge of airports, mayors running cites, homeland security agents, etc. all receive information from other intelligence sources. Information that is sugar coated for the public. My neighbor's nephew works for the FBI. When he asks him how's it "really" going with the war on terror, he tells his uncle if he told him, he wouldn't sleep nights, ride on a train, go over a bridge, drive through a tunnel or board an aircraft or live in a big city....

How about voluntary background/profiling checks for passengers? If they volunteer for it, and pass, they go through the express checkpoint without any restrictions, shoe removals etc. imposed today.

I only fly two-three times annually but I would gladly shellout cash annually to fly hassle free. If you volunteer to be profiled, noone will be accused of violating rights. And all the priveleges of flying will be returned to you.

This is a win-win solution. More than half the fliers flow through checkpoints easily while the remainder go through the extensive screening but the lines will be greatly reduced. Airlines won't suffer and the TSA has a new data base.

You can tell a lot about a passenger from a profile, credit records, job history, and family life.

What do you think?

I think that my credit records and employment history and family life are my business.

I see first hand how the TSA treats passenger bags and the contents of those bags, you think I want my personal information in their hands?

I've seen many a pair of panties held up for commentary,as well as the occasional 'massage device'.I've also seen TSA goons take an eighteen inch screw driver and hammer to the locks on a hardside suitcase and literally ruin the locking mechanism to the point it can't be closed again.

Then they'll wrap it up in tape and send it on it's way, and at some point in its travels it will burst open and you'll have a passenger filing a claim for pilferage when it didn't actually occur.

That's why I say voluntary. you have a choice. Besides, I've seen my share of "massage devices" held up for all to see long before 9-11 and the TSA. One time it belonged to a man traveling solo!

Besides, if you have a SIDA badge, they already have this info.

Well now listen to all the goody two shoes. "You can't profile, blah blah blah - it would never work!" Get real, at the very least - it would weed out over 90% of these losers!
I bet people would pay extra to be on non muslim flights as well! Just takes a little creativity. Yes there are ways to weed the muslims out.

Maybe not every muslim is a terrorist; however, damn near every terrorist is a muslim! B)

Nice article about profiling.Times AUgust 10th

Why do we the USA have to be so PC? I can tell you they aren't in France, England, Israel, and Heaven forbid the arab middle east.
I think AA should change there motto, to "Fly AA, We Profile"

No, I wouldn't want a system that would cause people to miss their flights. I ,and most U.S. citizens, would seek alternative transportation if it got that bad. Airlines would suffer for that.

When I suggested voluntary profiling I didn't have racial profiling in mind. I was thinking life style & psychological. A person who works for an pharmacuetical company, in sales, pulling 40-100k, owes 100,000 on a house with a daughter in college and a son in high school, 10,000 grand in credit card debt with a credit history that goes back 20 years etc etc is not likely to be a terrorist. He's your average american Joe.

Major police departments and the FBI use profilers with great success.

Alert at UK airport - Heathrow update14 August 2006

Updated at 17.00

The government has today announced that the UK security status has been reduced from critical to severe.

This has resulted in the partial relaxation of the earlier DfT security regulations.

The punctuality of flights of flights across Heathrow continues to improve and the majority of flights are departing on schedule. There is an average delay on arrivals of approximately 50 minutes. Across Heathrow 68 flights have been cancelled today and we anticipate fewer cancellations tomorrow.

TODAY – Monday 14 August:
This evening passengers should continue to come to security using a clear plastic bag for their hand baggage items. The plastic bag must conform to the new size restrictions* ie, 45cm (width) by 35cm (length) by 16cm (depth).

The restrictions on cabin baggage have now been relaxed and the items prohibited from cabin baggage are as follows:

- Any cosmetics
- Any toiletries including gels and toothpaste
- Any liquids
- Any drinks
- Any sharp objects

Please note: Baby milk and liquid baby food ARE allowed BUT the contents of each bottle MUST be tasted by the parent.

Prescribed medicines in liquid form e.g. diabetic medicines must be verified by a pharmacist, if over 50 ml, at any of the airport pharmacies.

Terminal 1 domestic departures:
From 15:00hrs today, domestic passengers travelling through Terminal 1 have been allowed one piece of hand baggage, as per the new guidelines.

TOMORROW – Tuesday 15 August:
From tomorrow passengers are permitted to carry items in one cabin bag. This bag should be no bigger than 16cm by 35 cm by 45 cm, the equivalent to a small laptop bag or handbag.

The above mentioned restrictions on liquids and sharp objects will continue to apply until further notice.

If you ARE travelling to the USA:
Extra restrictions are in place – you WILL NOT be permitted to take any toiletries or cosmetics including liquid or gel items purchased in the departures lounge into the aircraft cabin. Any beverage or liquid items must be consumed before boarding (food is now allowed).

A person goes thru security, then heads over to the gift shop and buys a minature tube of toothpaste and a small bottle of mouthwash, then runs into the restroom and shoves the stuff down their underpants or socks, then heads over to their departure gate and boards their flight... Now what...

Of course, easy for you to be smug about the Terrorism Support Agency's outrageous behavior: Flight crews are, of course, EXEMPT from this idiocy.

Hate to burst your self rightous bubble, but flight are not exempt.

I had to check all of my luggage, my liquids, and my cell phone coming from London.
