ZED tickets can be purchased on most airlines. STAR Alliance has little to do with it.

Yes and no. We do have agreements with dozens of airlines worldwide but most of the *A airlines are in the -ZL category (the cheapest one), whereas most non *A are in the -ZM or -ZH category, making travel on them more expensive. This is just a general rule though because I believe NZ is in the -ZH zone even though they are in *A.
Additionally, LH, LX, and I believe CO are the only ones to have an official policy/fare structure for ZED travel in business class if that is something you are interested in.
