NYT Article: Baggage Issues

There are two ways of looking at the baggage numbers....

1 - The rate of baggage reports (#/1,000 passengers). The monthly numbers for this year thru September are (starting with Jan):

US 8.45 / 7.26 / 6.66 / 5.84 / 5.69 / 7.84 / 8.56 / 10.33 / 8.93

Looks like improving performance thru May, then slipping to reach the worst in August (when the new carry-on rules went into effect).

2 - How we do against those airlines that report. For a little context, here's the same monthly numbers except they're the average for all reporting carriers:

Avg 6.92 / 6.08 / 5.81 / 5.27 / 4.94 / 6.28 / 6.50 / 8.08 / 8.25

So the industry improved thru May. The bottom line is that US was the worst non-express carrier for all but two months, beating Delta in Jan and Aloha in April.

If you folks could've just seen the bags that missed in CLT last night. Just ONE SECTION on ONE BANK in bagroom said they missed at LEAST 150 bags. Why ? All of the flights (many more on Sat) inbd from the islands trying to connect to the same bank. IT DOES NOT WORK. Customs was backed up. The TSA (another story for some where else) do not have enough of people or machines to scan the bags. And folks most of these island flts not even full yet. USAIRWAYS gets blamed for all these missing bags. We can not take the bags till we get them from TSA.
To whomever schedules these flts on the weekend, it does NOT work to connect these bags.

I have been saying that the last bank of flights need to be an hour later because of the international flights. Someone in planning needs to be fired!!

In PHX, carts of bags coming from the bagroom have missed flights in disturbing numbers. In each case, new-hires under the watchful eye of other new-hires have been the culprit. This is the result of a US Airways that wants a junior workforce and screw the senior folks. As long as they encourage a constant turnover, they will have these problems.

Agreed, but the big problem last night on which major bags were missed was the 1900 bank. I know for a fact in that one unit alone a full cart of LGA bags that missed was carried to the last flt. And there may have been more.

+ 1 on this.

Local media in CLT has been reporting major shortages with the TSA over the last couple of months and that the holidays will see record snarls in navigating to/from the airport. Delays will be on the ground and NOT necessarily with how your flight will operate. Adjustments need to be made NOW!

In CLT they have the "bag police" walking around checking the bags on the carts making sure that there are no misplaced bags on a cart. Well in doing this last night that left one unit short a person & on the 1900 bank again slammed with island bags. Being on person short in this unit caused somewhere between 40-60 bags to be rolled over to the next flight.
The unit that missed the bags had advised the proper people of the shortage of one person earlier. The response received was something to the effect we are keeping some bags from being put on the wrong carts. But look at the expense of the damage done JUST IN ONE UNIT ON ONE BANK.

This is what happens when a very small regional airline aquires a larger airline and does not have a clue what they are doing. These chickens WILL come home to roost.

So lets do the math for the bean counters in the castle. 50 bags at a MINIMUM of $50 dollars to deliver on the other end. By using all of my fingers and toes, that comes up to $2,500. Now I've done my part. How much would it have cost the company to have had the one extra ramper? My guess is 8 hours at $20.00 an hour and again using my math that comes up to $160. $2,500 minus $160 equals $2,340 bucks. DOWN A RAT HOLE AND PISSED OFF CUSTOMERS.

WAKE UP TEMPE!!!!!!

If it was up to the Al's ( Crellin and Hemenway )..they would contract out all labor..inside and out..they( the Al's) are the only ones worth any money. It's going to be a long 2 month's...Happy New Year...Doug

Operationally ...the new USAir..ways is a mess.

The banks in clt are too close together. From e to b with 30 minutes scheduled is not enough time add the grid lock at it makes 5-10 minutes to connect. They need more time between and also need a later bank like most majors have.

WAKE UP TEMPE!!!!!!

I doubt the supervisors and mangers on the CLT ramp are from that "very small regional airline" but are from the East. They are using the same common sense of a retarded monkey that has been handed down to them from past management and will continue to do so. Let's face it... East was f%cked up long before Tempe got a hold of it.
