Real Life After Layoff

Many(not all) of those upgraders are on the front line of this "get in bed with the company" mentality that exist in overhaul. For some reason, the upgraders were always the most loyal twu members and as a result, now loyal company men.
Most of the ones I know that went to AFW (and some of whom got upgraded to A&P) were EAL strikers, hardly company men.

Bob, you leave out one important detail. That is that when they first opened up the SRP/OSM classification positions in the mid 1990s, they were filled mostly with ramp employees who were slotted in with whatever they were making on the ramp. I worked with quite a few on the ramp that were making about $15-$17/hr back then and they went to AFW and started as an OSM/SRP with their current ramp pay. Therefore, a large number of them didn't start at the bottom of the OSM/SRP scale. Many of them ended up getting their A&Ps and of course got the license premiums.

Well you leave out the fact that the TWU also created the Junior Fleet Service Clerk. A new classification where the rate was so low that in some places it was lower than the minimum wage. So high paid FSCs became low paid mechanics, replacing mechanics who worked at a higher rate than these upgraded FSCs and the position they vacated was backfilled with much lower paid JFSC, so the company made out even better when that occurred. They got to get mechanics work done at FSC wages and got FSC work done at half the price of a topped out FSC.

<_< aa--- Just curious! Do these people have their A&P licenses?
The ones that got their A&P got upgraded to A&P. The ones who did not go for an A&P are still OSMs/SRPs.

Your analysis is correct. However, the Junior Fleetservice Clerk position didn't last very long and died a quick death.

Only because the company could not get anybody at those rates.

Imagine that, a union that agrees to rates so low that the company can not get anybody. Does such a union deserve your dues when they cant obtain desirable wages for their members? The officers of the TWU pay themselves very well.In fact they use the same excuses as management as to why we should take concessions and they shouldnt (while our compensation has decreased in real terms by over 30% since 2003 Jim Littles pay has skyrocketted to over $200,000, plus whatever kickacks he recieves from AMR for giving them the most favorable contracts in the industry.

If the market is the sole determinator of wages then why pay dues?

It is a well known fact that some members in Tulsa classified as OSM's/SRP's qualified for government assistance when they were hired into those positions. If that is still the case Im not certain, but that is a true testament to what a bargain AA got with the TWU.
