If this is not truly socialism, I don't know what is !

"On September 8, in what the Department of Education is touting as a "historic" speech, President Obama will be talking directly to students across the U.S., live on the White House website. But some parents and conservatives are blasting the president, calling the speech an excuse to brainwash American children."

One more nail in his political coffin !

If I had a child in public school, believe me , come hell or high water he would NOT be attending school on this day !

Has any other sitting president ever given a speech to students before?

I listened to a president talk to us on C-Span once. IIRC it was an encouragement to stay in school, study hard and a few hollow political promises that never came true.

Did the WH release a copy of the speech to you? I bet he is going to brain wash the little kiddies. Come on, share it with us.

BTW, if you had a child I am sure you would interview each teacher he/she had to make sure the views the teacher held were in line with yours. Seeing as though your kids would spend 7 or so hours a day with these teachers that would be very very important don't you think?

As if listening to a shot speech is so detrimental. I have sat through speeches of Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan and Carter as well as foreign leaders and dictators. Even listened to a speech from Hitler.

It's a speech. What are you so scared of?

#1. If I had a school age child, in this day and age, he or she would either be home schooled or sent to private school...............so it wouldn't be an issue!

#2. What kind of influence does Obama think he has over school-age children, other than those who belong to parents who think he is the annoited one ! ............So why even bother addressing children , if not for political reasons ! Let Michelle address the children............isn't that what First Ladys do, even those who were not proud of their country, until her husband was elected President !

#3. IF..........I had a child going to public school , it would be to learn about the abc's, not Liberalism!

#4. IF...........I wanted my child to watch a speech by any President, it would be at home ! Not forced on them through public education that MY tax dollars support !

Think your going to see a lot of sick-outs on the 8th !

Great for you.

Maybe the same thing the other two presidents said.

Like the other two presidents were?

I doubt it. I'm sure the tin foil crowd will but it will not be that many I hope.

"One lesson plan urged elementary school students "write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president." It advised that the letters "would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals."

"Peggy Venables, a former White House education liaison to Reagan, said "chills (went) down my spine" when she read the Obama administration's suggested lesson plans."

Hmm, "Help the President". How does that promote education ?

Can you say ............ indoctrination ?

Can you say paranoia? The previous two presidents who spoke to students both spoke about education, ways to make it better, stay in school and study hard. There is no reason to think that this would have been any different. With out hearing the actual speech and hearing the context of the question there is no way to know what was going to happen.

IMO, the right over played their hand as most politicians do. A better plan of attack would have been to STFU and let Obama step into it since that's what th right knows would have happened. How ever in all likely hood it would have been far more difficult to pain Obama in a bad light when he asked students to help him make education better verses now when they can say 'Obama just wants the kids to help him'. The speech was not presented and anyone can spin anything they want, true or not.

Obama can clean up the speech, assuming any cleaning was needed and say, see, all I wanted was them to help make school better, get an education and make something of them selves.

Its an obvious backlash that people do not like Obama, do not like the radical racists agenda, his racists administration and overt takeover of everything.

Next backlash: Students' take-home assignment: Census kits

Anyone tempted to ignore the 2010 Census will have a tough time doing it — especially if they have kids in school.

The government has launched Census in Schools, an all-out campaign targeting superintendents, principals, teachers, students and, indirectly, parents, as schools open across the nation this month and next. The message: The Census is coming and here's why everyone should care.

The goal is to send posters, teaching guides, maps and lesson plans to every school in the nation, Puerto Rico and U.S. island territories to encourage everyone to participate in the national count. The materials will land in more than 118,000 schools and reach 56 million students.

You missed a part.
The school effort is more ambitious than in 2000, the last time the government set out to count everyone. At that time, teachers had to request the material and it was available only in print. Now, the kits and lessons will arrive in every school and lesson plans can be downloaded online, where they will be available in 28 languages.

The Constitution mandates a complete population count every 10 years. The tally — down to the city block — helps redraw political boundaries and determine states' representation in Congress and the distribution of more than $400 billion in federal funds to state and local governments every year.

While I don't think Obama is the second coming of Hitler, I do find this disturbing. The longer he's in office the more I become concerned. Excuse me while I adjust my tin foil, the alien signals are getting through 😉

I'm concerned about a few issues as well. The school speech thing sure is not one of them. I am sure it will be one of the run of the mill generic "stay in school and make something of your self, help me make school a better place" type speech that presidents make.

Yeah, I agree the speech thing is probably not that big a deal. A lot of people feel differently though. My wife teaches part time at a private Christian school. This morning she told me the school previously planned on airing the speech in school. An outcry from parents has caused them not to.

I think a lot of the 'reaction' is based on scare tactics and falsehoods. No one even knows what the speech is about. Yet everyone is up in arms. Most kids wil not pay attention to what is even said. Those who do will not be affected one way or the other. Were that the case, we would all see eye to eye with our parents and we all know that is not the case.

It's a 10-15-20 min speech to get kids to stay in school, set goals and work hard. Same crap that has been said numerous other times. The original suggested curriculum was related to the speech in the context of the speech.

No one had a cow when Reagan or Bush did it ... why now?

I haven't called government school (formerly known as public schools) anything but liberal indoctrination camps in close to 20 years.

I really think my generation was the last one, as a whole, that was more influenced by our parents and grandparents generation then the liberals. It was present when I was in school, but it hasn't taken root and overpowering like it is now.

And with regards to the Census. I never hesitate to fill out that form. I put my name, my address, my sex, my age group and number of people in the household. Not a single bit of information beyond that. I write NOT CONSTITUTIONAL on all the other pages and mail it back in.

I have never had anyone come to my house demanding I provide more information. So they either accept it or discard it and don't count me. Either way, I don't care. The rest of their questions do not get answered.

Because Bush, nor Reagan was an overt extremist, a radical a racist and a liar. Plain and simple.
