Fifty-eight percent of Republicans report having excellent mental health, compared to 43% of independents and 38% of Democrats. This relationship between party identification and reports of excellent mental health persists even within categories of income, age, gender, church attendance, and education.

The differences are quite significant, as can be seen. While Democrats are slightly less likely to report excellent mental health than are independents, the big distinctions in these data are the differences between Republicans and everyone else.

But an analysis of the relationship between party identification and self-reported excellent mental health within various categories of age, gender, (b)church attendance(/B), income, education, and other variables shows that the basic pattern persists regardless of these characteristics. In other words, party identification appears to have an independent effect on mental health even when each of these is controlled for.

Dell,

I found that article and poll to be very interesting. Thanks for the link.

I was suprised when I saw the regression coefficients; they suggested that, out of the factors they studied, income and church attendance were the two most significantly related factors to self-reported mental health. I think everyone would have guessed that income would be significantly related, but church would not have been my second guess. Pretty cool!

I hope they do further study to determine whether being a repub causes someone to have better mental health, or if having better self-perceived mental health encourages a person to become repub. Have any thoughts on that Dell?

Also, since the study was based off of self-reported mental health (or self-perceived mental health), I would be interested in knowing whether some of the discreprancies between the parties can be explained by showing that some groups are just more honest about their mental health. That could go either way mind you.

Lastly, I am glad that the article mentioned that higher incomes is a significant variable effecting mental health, but that being a Republican appears to have an independent relationship on positive mental health above and beyond what can be explained by the income variable.

I wish they had done that poll, before EL-CHIMPO took office,...you know, back in the "good ol days" of the Middle Class !

I've got a suspicion that the numbers would be somewhat different.
