Oil nears $110/bbl

Ok... The thing that most people should remember is, don't expect our government, to do anything until, it absolutely has too. This is proven in Pearl Harbor, Katrina/Rita, etc.., If anybody can F**k somthing up, it will be them, and we the populace will pay the price, socialize the cost(s) just like with the current Credit/Liquidity crunch, subprime-housing mess.

And we want these people to create and run a "Universal Health care" system??? YIKES!

Developing alternative energy sources is enormously expensive. The oil companies have tried before and lost a ton of money; so, they are not going to go that route again until forced to do so. At Texaco, we invested several billion dollars in an oil shale recovery project back in the late 80's and early 90's. At a time when crude was selling for less than $20/bbl, the best we could do with the project was oil that cost over $50/bbl to produce. Now granted, that would look really good in today's market, but ancillary costs--such as transportation of the shale to the plant, environmental safeguards, etc--have increased a great deal as well.

Also, there is the issue that in the past the government has told various industries to go and invest in something, and after they do it, another branch of the government says "Stop! you can't do that. It's damaging the environment/restraint of trade/anti-trust/fill in your own excuse."

It is not that alternatives, cannot make a difference, they can. But the question is- If Peak Oil occured in 2005 (as production figures indicate), or if it occurs in 2010, or a "bit" thereafter. Is there time, to mitigate?

Agreed. Let's hope that it occurs in 2015 or later. Let's also hope that we, or the Japanese or Indians, actually put into effect a viable alternative.
