"Doug Parker is in a desperate situation, and he's not afraid to admit it: Oil at $130 a barrel and higher will turn his US Airways, and all airlines, into a dramatically different industry.
But the CEO is not giving up, and he has a message for anybody predicting his airline's downfall:

"If there are other airlines whose strategies are based on US Airways going away, they'd better find a different strategy. We are going to be fine, and we are going to get through this. We can compete as well as anyone."...................."

He is getting rid of IFE cause it weighs 500 Pounds. I like to see his face when 6-7 300 pound guys board a flight. He also states that he wants to start up 3 new international routes next year, one being Tel Aviv. Any ideas on the other 2? Will Tel Aviv require 1 or 2 aircraft?

Dougs looking tired these day's.But if he can pull it off he has my vote.

3 new international destinations--hmmmm interesting since the China flights were put on hold. Wonder what they will use to TLV and the other 2 international places and what aircraft

China won't happen until 2010 (if ever.)

Oddly, LCC still has deliveries of A330s next year. I suppose they will go to TLV and Moscow (if that's one of the other three.) We will have our favorite little transatlantic airplane, the 757, to go to Birmingham.

<SNIP> here's what Parker said travelers and airlines can expect:

Flying will be a luxury.
Somehow I don’t think putting up with crappy seat pitch, staring at a blank panel where the IFE used to be, while sipping a $2 cup of water can be defined as “luxuryâ€￾.

This post is double ROT-13 encrypted to abate the snoops in Tempe.

There might be $2 bottles of water, but not $2 cups. I believe tap water must be provided free of charge. There is nothing about ice, though, nor how good it must taste.

I suppose this newspaper interview was to make up for his bailing out on CNN's Larry King show and not taking calls from the public. I guess this was his way of controling the interview and avoiding questions about the fuel contoversy.

Doug, man, ........who are you trying to convince. You are not gonna be able to continue buisness as usual. Your plan to save this airline by means of charging for a can of Coke is not the solution, especially when most other airlines refuse to follow suit. People are gonna go where they can get the most for less. You are offering neither the most or for less. It's time to rethink how you do business. No one person has the all the answers, but this team that you have surrounded yourself with seems to be working for the competition. You need a new way of thinking if you are gonna survive this.

Five A330-200's are expected in 2009, along with four aditional B757's ETOPS retrofits, one already completed AC 942.

There was a part of the article that said they would have to charge 600-750 fares but would bring back the perks........ now why didnt we all think of that!!!!!! It would make sense to do that
