I wasn't really talking about the airfare through the cruiseline. I know many people who buy the air on their own because they can do better than what the cruise offers. The cruiseline may purchase the airfare at bulk rates, but they sell them at a higher cost--the pax doesn't see the discount.
It would be interesting to know how many people, although they are not on the plane on a cruise ticket, are actually going to MIA or FLL for a cruise.
I find it hard to believe that anyone can find airfares cheaper than what the cruise line offers unless you are talking about the low end cruise lines that do not include airfare in the cruise rate. For those that include airfare in the cruise fare, you can usually get something in the neighborhood of a $250 credit if you book your own airfare.
And, if you book your own airfare, it is standard with most of the cruise lines that you are then responsible for getting yourself to/from the airport and the ship. Personally, I always have loved the fact that they met us at the airport, took our luggage, and we didn't see it again until it was in our stateroom on the bed ready to be unpacked. At the end of the cruise, we left the luggage outside our stateroom the night before with the airline destination tags on them and we saw them again on the carousel in Houston. Through many cruises over 27 years, we never had one single bag go astray.
