American Airlines Pilots OK Contract Talks

FORT WORTH, Texas (Reuters) - The pilots union at American Airlines said on Thursday it authorized its leaders to negotiate contract changes with the airline after the carrier asked workers last week for $1.8 billion in wage cuts.

The Allied Pilots Association, which represents 13,500 pilots at AMR Corp.''s (NYSE:AMR - News) American, said it would begin discussions immediately with the world''s largest carrier on changes to its basic working agreement.
The union said any contract changes, however, would be contingent on participation from other parties and on a future economic return to the pilots.
Any agreement on changes to the basic working agreement will be contingent upon an AMR provided restructuring plan that would reasonably ensure the short-term survival and long-term viability of American Airlines, the pilots union said in a statement.
Two of three leading unions for employees at American said they held board meetings this week to discuss concessions after the company''s request for wage cuts, which it called a last resort to turning itself around. Industry experts have said the fate of American rests on its ability to win cost cuts from its unions as it fights to avoid bankruptcy.
