Pit Is Disappointing ?

Being a Pittsburgher I have been checking to see how things are going in my hometown. The loads are running around 90's except from MDW that seem to be full most of the time. Right now maybe Grandma and Grandpa haven't needed to take a trip out of town. Wait until summer vacation and it's time to see the grandkids. Our loads will get better.

I just recently read that Southwest has been very pleased with the initial start-up of operations at PIT and that load factors were well ahead of projection.

Load factors in the high 80's are being reported by Southwest.

I would not classify that as disappointing.

Just checked a couple of out-and-back businessman type trips...PIT-PHL Thursday AM returning Friday afternoon. Same thing with Chicago.

Very very very tough to find seats. Even the highest priced bucket was gone in many cases.

What county official? I've taken a couple of flights on Southwest and been by the gate otherwise, seems pretty full. Not packed, though.

Maybe that county official needs to read your blog. She/he may just be used to seeing US loads inflated by selling too many cheap tickets.

I believe Southwest's breakeven load factor is a little over 60 percent, so it's not likely WN is disappointed with the load factors quoted here. Some of the legacy airlines need load factors of over 100 percent just to break even.

Well, the county official who runs the airport does not seem to share your source's view. Care to tell us who it was?

Wherever SWA goes they seem to stimulate the market with more people flying than before. I honestly think that SWA will do well in Pittsburgh and they more than likely will increase their flying out of there in the future. Although, the city of Pittsburgh is under the impression that SWA is their to replace the flying that US gave up and also to make that a "new hub" for them. On a recent visit to Pittsburgh the local media was reporting that SWA could soon be operating out of ALL of the gates on the "A" concourse at Pittsburgh International. They are counting on SWA to be their knight in shining armour! :huh:

Our local media couldn't get a story correct if someone was right in front of them giving the information first hand.

I bet it was KDKA too. The worst of the 3 local news stations. UGH!

My prediction is CLE will be shut down. CO and the airport there has restricted our gowth there. All staff and equiptment will be moved to PIT who is more accomidating. Don't be suprised to see 80 or more flights by 2007 or sooner. In time Clevelander's will get to experience the 2 hour drive south to PIT. They (PIT) could become a transfer point taking flights from understaffed BWI and PHL. Heading west or south. From the Northern cities BUF/PVD/MHT/ISP/ALB

I flew from PIT to LAS on 5/22/05 on the nonstop. Usually going into LAS on a Sunday is busy, but not full. Flight had about 8 empty seats. Flight was running late due to ATC in to LAS. Not even the summer crowds yet. I think PIT is doing well. I asked the girl at the counter how the loads have been and she reflected that the 70-75% range is pretty accurate. She said some flights are full and some have 50.
