polystyrene ban

Don't get me wront -- I'm all for recycling. Our family sets out 2-3x as much recycling as we do garbage, and have done so for years. We even use the disease-laden reusable bags once in a while, but we also collect and reuse the plastic bags we get from every retailer we frequent.

But to try and tout it as a cost savings? Sorry, not buying that argument. There may be a resource savings, but like ethanol, it all comes at a cost.

Heck, even Democrats are looking at the cost of recycling... NYC is paying twice as much per pound for its recycling program as it is for sending it to a landfill...

Your "isolated case or two should take precedence" is the same argument people use against the death penalty, no?

I do not see accidental death due to contamination as being equal to the intentional execution of a prisoner who may be innocent. May be that's just me.

I think part of the problem with cost right now has more to do with scale than efficiency. A facility is need to recycle. If it is not operating at a full load, it will cost more to recycle. Most of what I have read indicates that the cost to mine, process and form an aluminum can or a glass bottle is far more than the process to melt down existing glass or aluminum to renew it.

Even if there is an added financial cost to recycling, what about the environmental cost/savings? Land fill size could probably be halved if not more. Oil consumption could be substantially reduced. There seem to be quite a few related issues that would be addressed as well.

I recycle everything I possibly can. The people I work with do not seem to care. They do it because I tell them to. I dig for bottles in the trash. They recycle when I remind them about it. We need to figure out a way to make it second nature. I am to the point where I don't care if it is via threat or not. I would rather use a carrot, but if a stick is needed, so be it. The amount of waste needs to be reduced. It is not sustainable.

I think what the studies you cite are missing is that it does not look at recycling as part of the equation. The studies, at least the parts that you posted all use the perspective that one form of product will replace another form of product. Taking this scenario I agree that there is no difference.

Of course, this is your ‘opinion’ as there is empirical proof on both sides to refute/support your position. Just like the Al Gore global warming bull-hockey.

I am approaching this from a recycling perspective. I want to see mandates for recycling glass, aluminum, plastic and anything else than can be re-purposed. I'd like to see packaging restrictions so that packages are not oversized for the product. I want all stores to have recycling stations through out the stores. All food service facilities to be required to recycle.

That’s sweet, Commiefornia is very stringent in recycling and I have the Recology bills to prove it. That’s why I don’t like you socialist commies that want pie in the sky environmental impact remediation without paying your way. Sure, complain about the ecology while you plug your electric car in the grid sucking coal generated electricity then complain if I turn on my air conditioner.

Then take your alkaline and NiCad batteries, rubber tires, and throw them in the trash. Yep, I absolutely respect you guys.

Just make a ‘LAW”, that will fix everything. Then make sure it’s not ‘equal’…

Thanks Commiefornia, I have a choice in recycling used oil. Biofuel or rendering, both provide a service, one is more expensive.

Yes they will ####. It will take a little extra time and effort but the cost savings would be enormous. The resources saved would be massive. The problem is that we are lazy and no one gives a crap. I do the recycling where I work. Been doing it for over two years. I still cannot get people to figure out that the blue bin with the recycling emblem is not for trash. I still have to dig cans and bottles out of the trash. And this is just employees who I can yell at for not putting things in the right place.

Cost savings will never be ‘enormous’ or even brake even, higher recycling costs, absolutely! Your hypothesis is flawed and drains unnecessary resources from the economy. I wish I worked with you as I’ would throw an empty V8 can in your trash just to see you go postal…

It can be done. I think it should be done. I know it will not be done and that is just sad in my opinion.

Hmmm. We know they are there. We use them. And the problem is that the government-those who know what's best for us-won't ban them until 2013? OK, that just seems retarded!

Look under the containers and look for the recycling symbol. If the number is 3, 5 or 7, those are the ones that contain polystyrene. Use them at your own risk or wait for the government to save you from yourselves!

Here's a secret, these plastics aren't actually recyclable. Recycling in my area is at 2, meaning anything above the number 2 cannot be recycled in my area. It is considered trash, but is exported somewhere that accepts higher numbers which are limited and few.

So if you know the dangers and still use something, why get ticked at the government who is in no hurry to stop business in America? I think styrofoam cups are the most dangerous things we use daily. Why? They are a petroleum product, and just for laughs put some gasoline in it and watch it disintigrate.

I'm stepping off my soapbox now and here's my 2 cents!

Personally I am for it. We are treating our planet like a waste can. There is a small island of garbage floatingout in the Pacific. People throw out tons of trash that should be recycled. The packaging of so many goods is substantially larger than the product is just so that it looks good on the shelf.

This is the only planet we get. There is no second chance, no do over , no easy button. We really need to start giving a crap about the land, air and water on this small little rock orbiting a star.

George Carlin was a masterful comedian. His Album "FM & AM" is still in my album crate.

Hippy Dippy Weatherman!
