United to leave Travelport reservations system and transition to HP
Posted by Dennis Schaal on 23 December 2010

The big decision is in: United Airlines plans to wean itself off its decades-long reservations-system provider, Travelport’s Apollo, and to migrate its reservations to HP’s SHARES system in 2012.
Travelport broke the news in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, explaining that United notified Travelport Dec. 16 that the airline intends to terminate their contract for Apollo reservations-system services on March 1, 2012. The contract was due to expire in 2013.

While I imagine that the version of SHARES (and its interface) will be much, much, better than that used by US, this is a big surprise to me. Whatever happened the rumored switch to Amedeus?

United has a LONG hstory with HP and the Merger probably hasn't changed any of that. Once United sold Appollo everybody KNEW it was only a matter of TIME before they cut the ties all together. It appears they'll be going with Continental's choice of GDS software as CAL's IT team will be runnung the IT show in the future. None of the employees expected any less.
Just like any of you?? We're standing by for the NEXT episode.. Because?? The Fun is Just about to BEGIN!!

The decision should not be seen as a surprise, and it makes sense.

The version of SHARES used by CO is quite advanced, and runs rings around the one used by US, and provides much more information to customers. For example, CO's web site could tell customers the status of the inbound flight years before US' system could even tell agents that information.

Overall a positive move imo.

Happy Holidays all...
