If there is planned expansion of 30 mainline jets in 2004, how can the be furloughing acitve flight attendents? Seems like this growth plan is all wishful thinking.

Yeah, you really can't expect US to keep staff around for something that may not happen until 6 months down the road, if at all. We're not talking a handful of people, we're talking 500+ people. Plus, wasn't it always understood that the new reserve system would result in additional staff reductions? I thought improving productivity was the whole point of revamping the system in the first place.

Where is the financing coming from for these airplanes?

If there can be no more small-jet orders for the Group (hence the Mesa expansion) because of financing issues, how is it that there can be financing for an A320?

As to the financing question, How was TWA able to take delivery of "One New Plane Every Ten Days' right till the end. I guess it's all about cuuing the deal. As to staffing and if new planes come they miight not come for a while. If they plan on adding 30 aircraft this year surely they would want to start to get them in place by the 2nd and 3rd quarters. They are the two strongest for UAIR. If the AFA contract has a furlough pay proviosn that grants x number of pay periord per year od service +unpaid vacation, then many are likely to get several monts of pay anyway. In the meantime you loose their productivity and creat ill will(which is aplenty) to bring them back in May. Doesn't add up if you ask me.

Are furloghed F/A's able to step right back into the job on recall? Or do they have to do some retraining/refreshing? If so, when? After 3 mos? 6 mo? when recurrent training required anyway?

I am just wondering if it is logical to furlough and then recall. If there is a huge training expense, it may not be logical.

You're kinda assuming that these will all be new birds - not necessarily the case.

By the way, who is Chp???? didn't know the California Highway Patrol monitored these boards.

Yes, they can basically step right back in. Depending on the length of time that you are gone you will only need to do 1 day of recurrent if your base month has passed or is about to pass. If you have been gone for more than 2 years then you will need two extra days of training.

Even when you sign a lease on a used office building they look at your credit. US Airways long-term credit may not look so good right now...

The only advantage US has is that there is a glut of available used aircraft available right now... However, most of that glut are less effiecient models. The used market is by no means a slam dunk.

Airbus and Boeing may also have built aircraft which were never delivered, and rather immediately stored... but I would imagine the number of these aircraft to be extremely limited.

Oh, and thanks TWICEBAKED for the info. I would have thought more "retraining" would be required. Looks like it could make sense to furlough and recall.

AM49AAA:

AM49AAA, your comment and point is valid. Please see the thread titled "Food For Thought", which I recently posted.

In regard to a fleet expansion, the aircraft would likely not be purchased, they would be leased. Furthermore, with the supply of used aircraft on the market lease companies need customers and would likely be willing to market their equipment. After all, they have the aircraft as collateral.

Respectfully,

Chip
