One of the topics of discussion tonight at our Passover Seder was service to/from AVP. Somebody mentioned that years ago (in the 70's), US used to fly from AVP-ABE. They'd pick up passengers at ABE and then continue on to PIT or wherever else. This does not ring a bell to me at all. Admittedly, I was a young child in the 70's, and I certainly was not hip to the air service available at our local "International Airport." Does anybody remember these flights? I'm wondering if these were actually EA flights and not US flights. Boy, have times changed!!!

Yes, there were flights like it. Though commuter planes. They would leave pit and go to either avp or abe then stop at the other city and do a round trip like that. Also, were flights from pit to aoo. Anyone know if we still fly to aoo--retired and haven't looked it up in quite awhile.
While I'm at it does anyone know which airport is closest to Carlisle or Newville Pa?? Just found out that my family owned the mill in Carlisle before the revolutionary war. Want to go visit it.

Probably MDT

I guess that is how the puddle jumpers got the name "commuter planes" (as that was what they were designed to be) which I still heard used from time to time. Now they are called "regional jets," and they fly from PHL-DEN.

Anyway....thanks for the confirmation.

I remember a DC-9 flight that operated for many years on a PIT-ELM-ITH-PIT or perhaps reversed, called a round-robin flight. While I don't remember the same re AVP-ABE Eastern may have in fact operated that route on a say a AVP-ABE-ATL routing.

Okay SS255, looks like Eastern operated 2 AVP-ABE flights each way for many years or so.

From this Mar 2 1982 Eastern System timetable looks EA operated two AVP-ABE-ATL roundtrips.

And if you are still interested from EA's Sept 6 1972 System timetable

http://www.departedflights.com/EA090672p4.html

http://www.departedflights.com/EA090672p66.html

http://www.departedflights.com/EA090672p68.html

Looks like back in 72 one flight operated AVP-ABE-DCA-MIA and the other AVP-ABE-DCA ATL-SRQ.

Eastern's timetables never showed aircraft types but I am guessing a mix of DC-9-30 and 727-100, possibly 727-200.

The same website's Allegheny Timetable from March 1, 1971 shows no ABE-AVP service but hey folks, check out the equipment types in the lower left of the page, wow, is that a jet powered Oldsmobile?

But in this Oct 28, 1979 USAir timetable their is one ABE-AVP flight.

And in this Dec 2, 1992 USAir timetable their is one Commuter flight ABE-AVP.

Some of you may think I am a geek but old airline timetables, OAG's and schedules are fascinating.

There was an MD-80 that operated PIT-AVP-ABE-PIT until the mid 90's. I remember it came in around 10am, and left at 10;45am. Sorry to say, but the guys in AVP ALWAYS did a 1/2 azzed job loading, by mixing the ABE and PIT bags......

Also with Mud town as the "hub" we had the 298 Mohawk program. Nord 262's with PWA PT-6's and a five bladed prop, and an APU ! 1976 - 1979. Flew all the old 580 rts. in Pa ,Md, WVa, etc.

Wow. Very impressive indeed! And this sounds about right, timewise, because my grandmother (who lived in Allentown) occasionally took the flight to come visit us....and she died in September, 1972.

Ah.....the good old days of air travel!

MDT is roughly about a half hr or so trip from carlisle ABE is about 45 min to an hr and half depending on traffic

I have one of the last EA timetables, and even then they were running AVP-PHL-ATL and AVP-ABE-ATL.

That 1992 US timetable is a trip back in time: California Shuttle still up, as well as many West Coast flights, mid-west US Express, Dayton and Indianapolis hubs, as well as most of the Florida Shuttle!

  Boy those were the days... before Ed and Seth gave away the store to SW! 😱
