Reservation Service Jobs being outsourced on internet

I am sure working from home was what the union was going to protect workers from.

They recently offered 80 FT reservation positions here in Miami, working from home. Great way to get bilingual without having to build another office.

If ever there was a perfect at-home job, wouldn't reservation agent be it?

Now that high-speed internet is widely available and powerful computers are very small and relatively cheap (compared to 20-30 years ago), why would any rational company rent a huge warehouse and install fixed phones and computers at workstations when the employees could do the same work from their homes in their jammies? For the employees, no work clothing or commuting expenses and for the company, no huge fixed investment in giant call centers. What am I missing?

Unless I'm mistaken, aren't all jetBlue res agents work-from-home from the start of that company?

Mechanics, fleet service, ticket/gate agents, pilots and FAs all have to be at the airport, but res agents can do their work from anywhere there's high speed internet.

First off, the work-at-home jobs in Res have been around since 2005 or 2006. Hardly anything new.

Second.... AA is the one hiring, so how exactly is this outsourcing?

and the res agent job is still the most "trackable" job at an airline - and the ability to monitor what is done by a person extends to any part of the world.

Speaking of res, has there been any push for AA to take over call handling functions in the US for its JV partners?

They are classified as Independent Contractors not employees.

That's incorrect. All agents, whether home-based or office-based, remain employees of AA.

Click my first link and scroll to American Airlines(in alpha order). The job is Reservations Agents. next to that you see the letters IC. Look it up in the Code Key.

Ironically, B6 is looking for Reservations and they are classified as EMployees.

So an aggregation website called ratracerebellion.com mischaracterizes the relationship between AA and its reservation employees and you take that as gospel?

They're employees, not independent contractors. Nothing about the relationship meets any of the criteria necessary for AA to correctly classify them as ICs.

Hey, don't bite my head off. This was a legitimate work at home site. Not a get rich scheme. If this is what they are saying...unless you can prove fraud...apparently your mom, AA, told them that these are the qualifications. Maybe this is heading your way, and you are in denial 🙄

Uh, you're the one claiming they're an independent contractor, based off what some random website shows them as.

Since you're so trusting of third party sites, here's one that says the job offers employee travel, something not available to contractors...

And here's another one, which says full-time, not a contractor...

I'm not trusting anything, because 1)I don't need a job, 2)I'm not airline material, 3)I couldn't care less, etc.

Since I am outside the box, I might not see it by your way, E. Remember when I claimed that the poor generated more trash and you couldn't believe it? I spoke from experience.

If the site is wrong in it's assessment, then with all due respect, call its bluff that it goes against AA policy!

E on your last comment

Having been an IC, you are not full time, otherwise you would be eligible for company benefits.

Try again.

I just got an email confirmation from a guy I used to work with and is now in Res management -- the home based reps are still being hired as regular employees, not contractors. They do have a different level of benefits and pay from the office based agents, which is how it's been structured for a couple years.

So, no outsourcing, just as I said yesterday.

Why a lower pay scale?

I've been home based for a couple years, and its worth about $5000 per year to me just in terms of the out of pocket costs. Between the train ($44), paying for parking ($20) and eating out ($35) comes out to $100 per week. There's also the 10 hours of commuting time....

There are other benefits.... the ability to have your kids with you at work without having to pay for child care, ability to be home when they leave for or get home from school, no risk of catching your cube-neighbor's flu/cold, being able to work when you might otherwise not want to go into the office and get other people sick, being able to wear anything you want, sleeping in until a few minutes before your start time, not having to bathe/shave....

All that is seen by some employers as a justification for a different level of pay & benefits.
