Seahawks Charter diverts to MSP.

Meto does dl always use a widebody acft for the teams they fly? I know the eagles used to fly nwa dc 10s not sure who they fly anymore though?

No I've flown the chargers on a 757. NBA use the 319
P.S. That -1 was a finger swipe type o on my iPad sorry.

Robbed--  I know we're talking NFL specifically here, but DL uses a lot of different A/C types for sports charters. Football is '57's and up, simply due to the size of the team & need for space to carry the gear. Going off memory, baseball usually uses MD88's or 90's, and some collegiate teams (hockey, hoop, volleyball) will even use a CRJ-200.

Meto-- Just out of curiosity, I know the F/A's will often "stay" with one team through the season (as much as is possible). Same with the charter coordinators. Do the pilots have anything similar?

Meto,

thank you for your perspective as an ACTIVE DL pilot.

is it possible that the charter coordinator asked for a new crew but was told that there won't any?

couple questions.

if this had been before 117, the crew could have continued on but with 117 they essentially cannot continue if they know they are illegal, right or wrong?

Would you agree that it is highly risky even under normal conditions and even more so under IROP conditions to schedule a crew on a leg into NYC and then on a westbound transcon? ATL-NYC plus a transcon is probably right at legal limits if everything is on schedule, let alone if there is even a minute of delay?

also, if DL had augmented the ATL based crew with an additional NYC pilot at EWR, could the flight likely have continued since the ATL crew already had several hours already recorded? Is there any way to have maintained the original crew and continue without diverting?

For those who want to note what DL did here, UA cancelled 21% of its mainline operations at EWR yesterday and ExpressJet cancelled 85% of its flights. It is hard to know how many of these could have been operated based on airport and operational capacity but it would very much appear that airlines are cancelling much, much deeper in IROP conditions in part because they cannot afford to use up huge amounts of pilot time sitting around waiting for deicing and airport congestion.

Also, Meto, DL says they are hiring new hire and regional carrier pilots for the first time in years in part because of 117. What are your thoughts on the stated pilot shortage is, esp. at regional carriers, and will hiring at the majors really push alot of regional carriers over the edge?

Another question: Why'd it take 2 hours to deice? A 763 isn't a small plane, but one would think EWR still has the trucks and employee skillset to expedite things. I wonder what other factors were in play?

Kev, if I recall correctly, EWR would have issues de-icing in the summertime, let alone when it snows.  Two hours to de-ice isn't bad for EWR, considering that on a bright sunny day, it might just take you 3 to taxi and take off...

DL is official charter airline of sf and sea .Normally this kind of charter, like the nba charters, are part of a rotation. Bid packages are done for February three weeks ago. So they knew that there would be a charter involving one of those two teams.
Nope, the 49ers flew United, not Delta, to the Super Bowl.

From what I understand, Delta @ EWR was experiencing some "operational challenges" Monday.  One of them being that
they had problems acquiring enough deicing fluid.  I believe they handled 3 Alaska charters, 2 DL charters plus
their own flights.  For some reason they ran out, thus long delays.

Again poor planning.

The forecast was for snow on Monday and Tuesday, not like no one didnt know about.

Thanks meto and kev.. do you knownif the 717 will be used in place of the crj for some teams?

and flight stats shows that DL cancelled a number of its own flights later in the day, validating the concern about running out of glycol.

We really don't know if it is poor planning if DL ordered glycol and the supplier failed to deliver.

Was DL supposed to tell the Seahawks that their charter would operate from JFK because DL has its own stock of deicing fluid there?

49ers didn't GO to the Super Bowl.
117 changes everything for DOMESTIC not so much for international.domestic can not continue if they know they are going over the limits. International can extend .Old days there were ways to agree to extend but not so much anymore.
On a charter de ice is always difficult be cause of the remote location/ irregular ops. A little wx in ewr and you will catch hell UAL would have done better here ..they have a better de icing I would think...JFK would have been better for DL but the game was played in New Jersey
We are hiring because of 117 and age 65... Would not be surprise to see changes in both.
Pilot are separate but f/a are for the season and by request of the teams ( and not picked by the players but management)
Regional will be hurt much more the anyone thinks .That is why the government should never have been evolved. Buf accident had nothing to do with rest it had to do with incompetence and not pilot logged hours either.

CLASSIC!!!

Touch down!

what do you mean, Meto? That you expect 117 and age 65 to evolve?

Imposing sweeping pilot rest requirements for a pilot who commuted across the country, is that what you are saying?

as for the 717, one of the CLE papers said that one airline notified them yesterday that all of their RJ operations would be upgraded to mainline aircraft because of UA's announcement to ddehub CLE.

That would have to be either AA or DL. DL already uses 717 on ATL-CLE, a market which UA is exiting.
