Seniority..How is it actually defined?

Seniority..as defined in the American heritage Dictionary:

sen·ior·i·ty (sēn-yôr'ĭ-tē, -yŏr'-)
n.
The state of being older than another or others or higher in rank than another or others.
Precedence of position, especially precedence over others of the same rank by reason of a longer span of service.

Websters Dictionary:

Seniority
Noun
1. Higher rank than that of others especially by reason of longer service.

2. The property of being long-lived.

Kinda' tough to see how much of that can be observed within the "seniority" contained within the Award.

As for seniority via "higher rank"...even the military services employ a "DOH" via which an officer's date of commission superceeds anothers...without concern for his/her branch of service. What we have here is an atrocity, not a "seniority" integration.

Just some food for thought..lest "seniority" become a term fully co-opted, and ignored in it's essential meaning.

Ah..well..that puts everything into a rational perspective..especially the capitalized shouting. It's also additonal evidence..as if such were needed..that the "Award" is a foully imbalanced windfall for your evidently immature self. Operations in the east are fast going sour...the employee/pilots group's about to embrace a shoot-on-sight, mutally antagonistic demeanor...Sigh..Yup..."IT'S OVER" allright.

Acutally our seniority is defined in section 22 of the contract. B 3 describes the list.

As it happens, yes. In this industry, what DOH results in enough seniority to hold A320/737 Captain? 767 Captain? 747 Captain?

The arbitrator didn't award seniority. He recognized that equal seniority required different amounts of longevity to accrue on the two sides, and awarded pilots on each side the seniority that they'd accrued. What he didn't do was award the East pilots the seniority they would have accrued if they had been on the West side nor award the West pilots the lack of seniority they'd have accrued if they'd have been on the East side. He merely recognized the senior that pilots of each side brought to the merger.

Now, admittedly, all the shouting is because the arbitrator didn't award seniority. He didn't give the East pilots the seniority they would have accrued if they had been West pilots their entire career. Neither did remove seniority that West pilots wouldn't have if they'd been East pilots their entire career.

He just let everyone keep the seniority that they'd actually accrued.....
