I believe it is time for NWA to restart service to Australia especially Sydney, because of the lack of Skyteam connection to this market, additionally it could provide compeition for Qantas and United. Through Los Angeles, or maybe even San Francisco, Northwest could iniate an alternative for the customer, and provide a new market for a growing alliance. Skyteam would truely become a global alliance, but without the Oceania market it looks as though Oneworld and Star remain in the lead.

NWMSP,

Here is the "Cliff Notes" version:

The truth of the matter is, that nwa should have never STOPPED flying to Sydney. Some years ago, the brilliant "bean counters",( the so called "talent" ) decided that it was not a profitable route, so they ceased operations.... Several months later, scratching their ,,ah,, heads. They realized that it was in deed , a profitable route. So they wanted to start up again, however the Aussie gov't, told them where to stick it !!!! ( Hint, a place where the sun does not shine ! )

Saturday,

Does that imply that NWA is not authorized to fly US-Australia routes any longer, or until they regain authorization from the Australian government? Or is it that NWA still holds the authorization to fly to Australia but chooses not to?

NWMSP,

This is what was told to us, at least for the last ten years..... That the Ausie Gov't has not granted permission. If anyone out there has any more insight, I am all ears...

Interestingly I was searching Yahoo, hoping to find information regarding the current situation between NWAC and the authority to fly to Australia. I did not find this information but did find some interesting background history explaining the situation Northwest encountered when flying to Australia back in the early 90's. Here is the link to the story. Kev is right, Northwest seemed to have gotten stuck in a legal situation with the Australian Department of Transportation, because Northwest had been operating flights between Osaka, and Sydney. United and Qantas stepped in, and basically decided the fate of Northwest's service to Australia. Northwest was forced into many "corners" when operating these non-profitable routes, and ultimately just didn't have the proper equipment or authority to operate profitable service to Australia.

Flying from the USA to Australia is too long a distance to fly on only one healthy engine. How are they going to put oil in the engine(s) at 30,000 ft+ over the Pacific? 😛
