Northwest recently went to a hats optional policy for the pilot uniform. It seems some have taken it a bit further to include not having to completely tuck in their shirt or tie their tie. Call me old fashion but I think the over all appearance is more professional with the uniform hat included. Especially during these times, pilots need to convince the public we are worth what we are paid. Maintaining a professional appearance will help.

Are you sure this isn't just for the 'freight dogs' (NW Cargo)...I find it hard to believe that NW mainline passenger pilots are not wearing a complete uniform...why would any flight department allow such a unprofessional appearence? <_<

The policy is: hats optional for all pilots at NWA. I think that a uniform should be standard at any carrier otherwise crews begin to look rag-tag.

I seroiusly doubt the general public cares whether or not the pilots are wearing their hats as they stroll through the terminal. Emily and C54Capt seem to have lost focus: with all the huge issues facing the aviation industry your concerns for the NWA "hats optional" policy seems a bit trivial. How about we focus on getting the Jetblew pilots wages up to the level of a second year truck driver then we'll worry about the hats.

I see several NW flight crews daily, and have yet to see anyone of them with untucked shirts or untied ties...The only thing I've ever noticed is that once the cockpit door is closed, some pilots put on a baseball-style hat (can be seen on pushback).

This is truly an inane subject matter...but if we must.....Pilots should wear whatever makes them comfortable when in the privacy of the cockpit, but please, please...put on the ties and tuck in the shirt tails when you leave for a potty break or to get a cup of coffee! The hats...well who really cares!
