Just flew Southworst from ORF to JAX. Sked departure 6:55.Door closed at 7:09am, Southwest website shows skd departure. It certainly isn't fair for the DOT ta accept their word for schedule times when we have to use ACARS.

according to the DOT guidelines, the flight isn't technically late unless it leaves or arrives 15 minutes outside scheduled times. WN beat it out by 1 minute in this case, which as far as the DOT is concerned, is on-time.

Isn't the DOT criteria about the arrival time? Did it ARRIVE within 15 minutes of its schedule?

DOT criteria is arrival within 15 minutes, and that is the metric they publish. Of course without ACARS, WN's on/in times are what they say they are, too.

Departure times are more about internal metrics.

FWIW, a bunch of US flying is express, and they call back some times that would require breaking the laws of physics, too! 😉

Bottom line - anybody without ACARS is going to fudge to keep the brass off their back, and in the WN example, burnish their public numbers.

Our "OUT" time doesn't begin when the door is closed, it's when the aircraft senses movement over 3 kts. The "IN" time is when the brakes are set, not the door opening.
So ACARS lies too, but saves the company money by robbing the flight crews.

Interesting topic, though not a new one. But shouldn't it be on the WN board? (I know, not nearly as many readers  ) Off topic, why is the US board the busiest, by far?

YEA.... some of my TWA buddies went to WN and they emailed me and told me the Capt and/or FO writes down the arrival time puts it on a cocktail napkin.. and the gate agent takes it to OPS.. so I guess on departures the agent who pulls the jetway or closes the door lets OPS know the flight HAS DEPARTED....

We have had ACARS publishing our out/off/on/in times for the past few months. The website never gives an actual departure time. Only shows if its delayed. It only says departed after the flight leaves the gate. The only actual time that shows on the website is the arrival time, after arrival of course.

Then I guess the latest Air Consumer report for August should include the ACARS time. If so - when comparing it to the previous quarters and years - there is literally no change. Okay...the numbers were better for August. If the pilots were "cheating", shouldn't there have been a noticible decline in the August numbers, since ACARS was used?

The first few posts are from a few blowhards who have opened their mouths without knowing what they're talking about. The last few posters do know what's up: SWA is using ACARS for it's flight times. Dead issue. Find a new dead horse to beat.

If you paid for your ticket you're grossly misinformed.

IF you were flying NON-Rev, how dare you B*tch and call us Southworst. You flew at OUR convience and you complain afterwords?

It's like complaining about your meal at Denny's after all but the crust of the toast is left.

We do use ACARS so now is your time to apoligize.

NOTE: All ORF or JAX ticket counter agents beware of all non-revs (NON-WN) headed to either place please enforce all interlining rules to the letter.

Because US has the largest amount of blowhards on the whole dang internet.

And I’m one of them.

It was a question, don't get defensive.

This is a Forum so it's open to everyone it just so happens that U people use it more that we do.

That could change at anytime, any particular forum, depending on what's going on.

It's not a bad thing.

WN has been lying about times for years. I don't blame them.
The most profitable airline in the industry can't afford ACARS. Please. Call a spade a spade.
If WN started paying crews basde on over-under as apposed to the leg, WN's times would take a hit.
