The grant was no where NEAR what I have paid in taxes over 20 years of working. Not even close. Hell it did not even add up to 2 months of the taxes I pay.
 
The only thing I ponder is how you can be so pathetic as to try to paint an investment the government made in me that produced a profit for them as a "handout".  Explain that one to me. I could understand your statement if the government saw a loss on the money but they got it back plus more. So you explain to me how the hell I scammed anybody. If you really want to look at the economics of it I will be paying for that "grant" for the rest of my life because I have more earning power. Go ahead and apply your libtard math to that to justify your idiotic statement. Then tell me how welfare and food stamps compare.

Sounds very similar to someone who worked a dead end airline job for 12 years and did nothing to improve himself. This, until given a boot from the job and handed some free money for training to improve. Now let's talk about what you "Paid in" and compare it to someone who since 2008 has relied on Food Stamps for survival. Prior to 2008 this person had a decent job. One that caused him to pay nearly $10,000 USD in taxes to the IRS. The most generous state pays about $200/mo. in EBT benefits or $2,400 annually. Enough to pay for 4 years of Food Stamps for every year the person paid $10,000 in income tax. In my case it would be for the rest of my life if I lived to be 92. 
 
If we all had your socialist attitude we'd all apply for food stamps if we hit the economic skids.
 
Which brings us to the work requirement for Food Stamps. The $10,000 is tax paid, so the money I've "Paid in" is then being subject to a double tax. Once when I paid it and again when I provide something of value (my labor) in exchange for food stamps. So once again the government confiscates the fruits of my labor (Whatever busy work the government decide is needed). 
 
Say the labor in question is picking up litter in the park and the food stamp "Pay" is minimum wage of $7.25.hr. Now fast forward to tax time. The IRS code gives them permission to "impute" the actual value of goods and services in a barter exchange which is what this would be. Let's say for argument that a city worker earns $13.25/Hr. or $6.00/hr MORE then the food stamp recipient. The IRS can and does impute that $6/hr as ordinary income and requires you to pay income tax on it, even though you never actually earned that money.
 
So the lazy foor stamp recipient would be required to pay income tax. Plus since his IRS1040 now shows a highewr income they will find their benefits reduced.

What programs have I benefited from that I did not make a direct contribution? UI premium's come out of my pay so that can't be it. I benefited in a quicker drive time today on the PA Turnpike. But wait the toll was $3.20 so that couldn't be it!
 
I never had student loans, Government backed mortgage, Np food stamps, WIC, Energy grants, General assistance or EBT. So enlighten me as to what exact and specific "freebie" I've gotten?

The concept of a free public education dates back to England well before the US was even colonized.Education was considered "in the public interst as early as 1647. The concept is well established. Using your bag of hammers logic we as citizens of the Republic should be billed for the Military as well as education.

If you're referring to the appropriate role of the Federal Government in a Constitutional Republic then yes I "Get it"! Granted, it's a debatable topic and it's obvious I favor a very narrow interpretation.
 
For me the ONLY appropriate role for the Federal Government is the preservation of Liberty and National Defense and assistance in times of natural disaster.
 
So beyond those narrow confines it is the states and local governments that run the rest of the show. Social Security is a Ponzi Scheme and needs to be phased out along with the IRS. In a government that adhered to the founding documents there would be no federal food stamps or education grants as their would be no Departments of Education and the government would be small enough to not need an income tax.

According to the past examples you have given I could use the argument that I don't have kids so why should I be forced to support public education. I am getting no direct benefit from it.
 
The answer of course is it benefits society as a whole. It is not a handout it is an investment. We expect a return on that investment don't we?

I don't consider the grant a handout, I consider it an investment. That grant came with an expectation that I better myself and use the education to procure gainful employment. That is exactly what I did. Hopefully some of the money I am taxed will go toward helping someone else. I have tried to inform others of free training provided by Transportation Work Advance for some time now. I support educating people and lifting them out of poverty (you know because it is "in the public interest"). They are training Diesel Mechanics right now and placing them at starting wages between 14 and 16 an hour (good starting pay for this area). That is a social program worth having; paying someone to sit on their couch is not. I guess to you it is all the same. I guess if you had your way you would be on the steps chastising them as well just like you have me for these last few weeks. The truth is I don't care what you think. At the end of the day I am responsible for myself and my wife and that is where my priorities are.
 
I could use the argument that I am now considered "skilled" labor and have increased earning power, therefore I pay more taxes. I guess it was "in the public interest" to train me. The government has already realized a profit from that grant and probably will throughout my career. You conveniently ignore that part because it does not support your agenda even though I have stated it on several occasions
 
 
You can paint it however you like but the fact is going to school to gain earning power and become a productive citizen again after job loss is not the same thing as living on welfare with no ambition to become self-sustaining for years on end. I never stated I was 100 percent against social programs. I have stated many times that they need to have limits on them. Social programs were meant to temporarily help people through rough times not become a lifestyle.
 
You are trying to paint me as a hypocrite. I have said on many occasions I support social programs just not their abuse. Again you ignore the MANY times I have said that because it does not support your agenda.
 
The truth is you, Glenn, MS Tree, 700UW, and Astra all take any opportunity you can to try to discredit me because we have opposing moral and political beliefs.
