What's new

Station Closure?

Well, I look on the bright side. Maybe we will go back to our two or three gates in the new LAS terminal. That AWA dump is really horrible.

Funny you should comment on that. The A and B gates are almost fully "rehabilitated" by the County. The gate areas are all County, we don't own anything upstairs other then the "Y" room and a few office areas. The middle A gates just got completly gutted and remodeled downstairs. With the flight cuts I've heard we'll be moving out after spending all that money.

There is a huge article on the front page of The Wall Street Journal about how the casinos are in huge debt and many are folding ( no pun intended ) due to the economic downturn.

I had no idea the casinos were in such trouble.

Discretionary expenditures are always the first to be dropped from a budget in a recession, so this is not a surprise to me in the least.

Well, it shouldn't have surprised me but I'm so worried about my own expenditures, I haven't given the casinos a second thought.

And like most people, I assumed the casinos were phat with cash.

Interestingly enough, most people who go to Las Vegas on vacation today, do not go to gamble. They go to see the shows, etc. Also, a lot of the traffic is convention business. Oh, almost everyone puts a few quarters in a slot as they pass through the casino, but gambling is not their prime motivation.

One of the reasons that business is off is going to Vegas is getting as expensive as a trip to New York as far as hotel costs and entertainment. Tickets for Cirque du Soleil's "O" run $120 each!!! (Actually, may be more now. That's what it was 2 years ago.) That is more than front row seats for most first run Broadway shows. Some of the hotels have gotten into the $300/night range on rooms as well. Most people can not afford that price range.

Just got back from a quick trip to LAS. Hotel prices depend on day of week . Weekends are much more expensive. We paid $75.00 per night at NYNY. Saw Mystere on Mon night and tickets ran about $70.00 each , but other shows were much more expensive. There are many other things to do in LAS besides gamble. Quick , short trips to Lake Mead , Hoover Dam, and Red Rocks Canyon are easy to do and very cheap.

Would there be any feasibility of making Vegas a totally Express operation? I keep hearing we have too much express capacity.

Look at the cities from which you have non-stop mainline service to LAS. Then ask yourself, would I be willing to fly that distance in an RJ? I know that most of my company's (AA) nonstops to LAS are longer than I would be able to take in an RJ. We have an RJ nonstop from XNA to LAX. I would have to be medicated.

You are certainly correct in today's environment. However, in the future do you see the pain-price point moving to accommadate more RJ's ?

No.

That is a pretty slippery slope you seem to want to travel on. I think many travelers understand the fiscal scams and subsidies that made the current crop of RJs "economical". If you push that "pain-price" too much, the backlash will send many airline execs to jail, IWH.

As I commute, I constantly hear passengers remark how roomy the SW cabin is compared to the typical ethanol burner from Brazil or challenging "eh?" from Canada and how they have rearranged their schedules to be comfortable.

"...would I be willing to fly that distance in an RJ?"

It depends. From the point of view of the average leisure traveler (which is all LCC seems to wish to attract,) I would certainly fly the distance on an RJ if it was a nickel cheaper than a 777 seat, and the airplane wasn't a Piper Cub (i.e. any airplane with propellers.)

If yields won't cover CASM with mainline aircraft, putting RJ's on the route just makes the problem worse because their CASM is higher. Unless you're including the larger variants of the Embraer (190/195) or the C-series being designed by Bombardier in the "RJ" catagory - their CASM is comparable to the smaller mainline aircraft of equal age.

And this is why Vegas can be affordable for everyone. There's a hotel, show, buffet and day trip for people on all budgets. But things are looking bleaker in sin city, and airlines cutting capacity into/out of it aren't going to help. Another "Vegas is on the decline" story here, with many more to come in the next year for sure.

Case in point...I'm going out this weekend. On a $165 one way fare on US bought at the 2 week mark (a fare that increased to $300 the next day, so my gamble paid off). My return segment is to somewhere else, on another airilne. Comp'd room at the Palazzo as a result of minimal to moderate gambling there ONE time in January. I never get comp'd full room rates in an upscale hotel, because I'm not the $100 blackjack bettor. But this is probably a testament to how badly the town needs to bring people in.
