etops,

I agree with you totally. This goes both ways, you have to admit though that there will be a lot of people that will have that smile on their face when WN starts to lose money. Right now the only thing saving them is their hedges.

Southwest has done nothing but ruin this industry. Go back too regulating this industry. #### southwest
You're entitled to your opinion, but you should know that Southwest was around several years before deregulation. And be careful what you wish for - reregulation may well result in the shrinkage of all the airlines (read that as job losses). And that would impact Southwest as much as anyone. Sadly, even if that were to occur, WNrforlife claims to be a long time employee of Southwest (I tend to doubt that, but that's another thread) - so he/she would not be impacted by shrinkage.

Ruin the Industry?????? HOW?

By running a profitable company while still treating it's employees with respect and paying them well?

By being smart enough to hedge fuel? Which, by the way, will never "run out". You buy hedges with cash, which WN has tons of by being profitable! A never ending circle.

As a former Deltoid, I saw how bad executives can ruin a company and scr*w the employees just to make themselves rich so I can appreciate WN's managment team a fun loving culture.

Nuff of my rant.....

I'd like to thank WNrforlife for once again proving that he does not "live the Southwest Way". :down:

I, and several others I know, have been blessed by excellent service from Frontier. Good People, Cool Concept. BK is just a really rough place to be in this economy.

I think the latest service announcements, and the NYTimes article pointed out that the target is really United. It'll be shedding something in a merger with USAirways, and SWA is making decisions while we have metal and money to do it. Denver is being a great market for us, and were showing the LUV by bringing more aircraft.

IMHO

DLtoWN,
Could you [or anyone] please post the fuel hedging terms @ WN for 2009 ? Thank You

According to this article WN is 55% hedged @ $51/bbl. That percentage will almost certainly increase before the end of the year.

Jim
BoeingBoy, Thanks for the information.
I believe that other airlines [Usairways] also have fuel hedges in place.
Do you know if this is true or not ? Thanks

DLtoWN,

approximately 70% of estimated 2008 fuel at approximately $51 per barrel;
approximately 55% of estimated 2009 fuel at approximately $51 per barrel;
over 25% of estimated 2010 fuel at approximately $63 per barrel;
over 15% of estimated 2011 fuel at approximately $64 per barrel;
over 15% of estimated 2012 fuel at approximately $63 per barrel.

And, as BoeingBoy said, more are being purchased as they go along.

True for most airlines of any size. For example, US has about 55% of 2Q08 hedged at between $70 & $80 something/bbl - meaning those hedges pay off if the price is above that range.

The biggest problem in trying to compare hedge positions between airlines is that there are some differences in hedge instruments used, some (like WN) give data further into the future than others, and finding a single point in time that data is available for all the airlines is somewhat difficult.
