Thanks Doug: US Outsourcing 7 cities

What does the ramp contract say about outsourcing? Can they really outsource SNA with 6 mainline flights, BUF 5 mailine, OAK 3 mainline & MSY with 4 mainline flights on average each day?
ABQ is all express so that is no surprise and MHT has been losing mainline flights and now has about 1 a day. Does anyone know what the union says about this?

ATL is coming back inhouse but so should IAH & DTW.

Well I guess the folks in SLC, SJC, SMF, PDX, PVD, SEA & MCI should all be prepared for a station closure next year. Just start saving money now.

I'm very surprised that US got rid of LAS-LAX and LAS-SFO, considering both of these airports are major *A hubs to Asia and the South Pacific. I would think that there would be enough *A traffic (even with UA's flights) to justify these routes.

What a way to live thinking every minute that your job may be outsourced

As of Dec. 31st 2011 there are 18 stations that will be unprotected......most are on the west coast, but very very very...weak scope language reads:

" Should a station scheduled mainline weekly departures be reduced to a level of (56) weekly departures on an annualized basis, the company may( but they really mean WILL) outsource Fleet service work (EXCEPT FOR THE PERIOD OF MAY 8, 2008 THROUGH DECEMBER 30, 2011 THE COMPANY WILL NOT OUTSOURCE NORMAL AND CUSTOMARY RAMP WORK AS DESCRIBED IN ARTICLE 4 A. 1 AT ANY STATION where that work is being performed by fleet service....these stations are named for outsourcing ABQ-AUS-BUR-ELP-OAK-OMA-ONT-RNO-SJC-SLC-SMF-PDX-MSP-MCI-MKE-SEA-DEN AND SAN.... So it looks like there will only be like maybe 2-3 left after all of this....

There were many of us on the east that tried and tried to tell people not to vote for that contract, but seemed everyone saw the $ and forgot to read that SMALL PRINT.......Too bad...since once these jobs are gone, they are gone 4ever!!!!

The name of that game is Southwest.....they would rather just cut and run as they've done in many other markets and allow Southwest to become even more of a powerhouse than they already are....shouldn't surprise anyone since management teams across the board have been doing this since the decimation of PSA.... I guess it's easier to cut and run rather than figure out a true solution to compete.... typical incompetence....or TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN STYLE OF MANAGEMENT!!!

This news pisses me off to no end. Like I said many times this company does not care about anyone here, management is just here to make the quick buck and move on. And for the rampers that voted in the pos contract I hope one day the dark hand of chance finds you.

I'm guessing at this point most people that voted for that dirty rag have now been handed another dirty rag in the form of a packet!!!!

Someday people will listen to words of wisdom from people who know!!!!!

This is refreshing to see that there are actually people here that see what is really going on at this airline. Bravo!!!

Given the outsourcing spree that took place on the East in 2005, this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. The contract language is weak to say the least, and it gets worse. In looking at the 2008 CBA, it appears that in order to get the Fleet work back in an outsourced station you need to have nearly 90 weekly Mainline flights..............

Now we know where they'll be getting the a/c for the Delta slot swap flights

We've known that for a while. Republic, PSA, Air Wisconsin.......When the west gets rid of their final 737s and receives more A321s they will just fly more of the former east routes.

Is this just ramp or both ramp and customer service? What cities are affected?
The CWA contract, for all its flaws, still has stronger outsourcing protection than that for the ramp.

AFIK, A city with more than two mainline flights per day must be CWA staffed. EMB 170/5 are considered "mainline" for this purpose; CRJ-700 are considered "express". How this came about is rather murky, there certainly was no membership vote.

But at there is, at least, better protection than the ramp has. A city like MHT cannot be outsourced for customer service, unless it goes to mostly CRJs. Not that anyone would put that past the company, but the 170/5s have to fly somewhere. T hey are, at least for now, "mainline" as far as C/S goes. When the new contract negotiations come up, CWA would be very well advised to go for very strong scope/outsourcing protection. An extra two dollars per hour or additional vacation week won't matter if the jobs are outsourced.

The outsourcing of the ramp handling is certainly a shame --- and devastating for those affected --- but hardly surprising. At least ATL is coming back in house, although I don't see everyone eligible taking a transfer.

Does the company pay for moving expenses in this case? I understand that CWA gave this up in the '05 concessions.

Just wondering whats up with ATL getting Fleet work back? Don't get me wrong, I think that it's great that Fleet gets any work back period. I haven't looked at the ATL skd recently, and I am surprised that US would have enough Mainline service into DL's mega-hub...

Not so long ago, ATL was just about all Express. Go figure
