And don't forget about how WN can connect people thru these cities while creating their great low fares.

Need to go from PHL to LAX, with a connection, it won't be more than $299 one-way at the last minute.

Southwest whetted bargain travelers' appetites today by revealing that its Philadelphia service will begin May 9, 2004, with daily nonstop service to Chicago Midway, Las Vegas, Orlando, Phoenix, Providence, and Tampa Bay. The accompanying fares and direct and connecting service to other cities nationwide will be announced later.

"Announcing our entry into Philadelphia was just the appetizer, and the destinations are the entree," said Joyce Rogge, Southwest's senior vice president of marketing. "Just wait until you see our fares -- you'll want to save room for dessert!"

Customers can expect a healthy serving of fares that are drastically lower than those already offered by other airlines, even at the last minute. It's well known that Southwest caps its last minute fares at $299 one-way -- a great deal, for example, on Southwest's transcontinental flights. This unrestricted walkup fare is the most Customers will pay on Southwest. Even lower walkup fares are available on Southwest's short and medium haul flights.

Southwest Airlines Reveals Philadelphia Service; Carrier Announces Nonstop Destinations From Its Newest City

DALLAS, Dec. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Southwest whetted bargain travelers' appetites today by revealing that its Philadelphia service will begin May 9, 2004, with daily nonstop service to Chicago Midway, Las Vegas, Orlando, Phoenix, Providence, and Tampa Bay.

Fares do not include a federal segment tax of up to $3 per takeoff and landing. Fares also do not include airport-assessed passenger facility charges up to $4.50 one-way or a government-imposed September 11th Security Fee of up to $5.00 one-way.

Southwest Airlines' website, southwest.com, is not only easy to use, but it offers some of the lowest fares online. In 1995, Southwest launched the first web site in the airline industry. Today, southwest.com is considered the largest airline web site and ranks as one of the largest e-commerce sites with the likes of Amazon.com.

In recent months, Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV - News) has become the nation's largest domestic carrier in terms of Customers boarded. Based in Dallas, Southwest currently operates 2,800 flights a day with a fleet of 387 Boeing 737s with an average age of 9 1/2 years -- one of the youngest pure jet fleets in the domestic airline industry.

The WN Cities were announced this morning from PHL:

Good luck US!
PVD and MDW are the ones that will hurt.

The pressure on the infamous BOS and ORD fares ex-PHL will be huge. I also think that it is worth noting the fact that LAS and PHX are in there--clearly, WN has no fear of going west from PHL. Once they build up some loyalty in the PHL market, look for LAX and OAK to put out the lights.

Adding to Clue's comments above, I would also expect Southwest to add at least three other nonstop markets within a year or two that will further harm US Airways' prospects:

1.) MHT - To serve the northern half of the huge Boston market.
2.) FLL - To attract some of the large south Florida market, and ruin US Airways' yields in the process.
3.) BNA - To open up markets in the lower Mississippi Valley and Texas with a more direct routing through this Southwest focus city.

The most insidious effect of Southwest's entry into PHL is that it won't just hurt US Airways' revenues in Southwest's nonstop markets, but (as Clue illustrated above) in numerous beyond markets as well. So with nonstop service to only 10 or 12 markets (within a few years), Southwest will likely dramatically decrease US Airways' revenues in virtually every major -- and many not-so-major -- markets it serves from PHL.

US Airways management had better be working overtime to figure out ways to meet this upcoming challenge! Good Luck!

.....Oh U has a plan all right. Captain Munn says the takeover of UA's well-worn B767-222's will set everything right for us.

I see U's plan with 20/20 vision....We will become a short-term dumping ground for the RSA's leasing interests , case in point being the UA 767's they hold paper on...then U will continue to bleed until Chapter 11 Redux becomes an academic absolute....earth shattering news? NOT !!!

Job #1 during Chapter 11 Redux will be to "Abrogate" every Union Contract on the property....and every agreement with all the cities we serve at present.....Everything is on the table afterall , right?

U will end up being a company of maybe 20,000 Employee's at best....the majority of the work will be farmed out wherever possible? Yet with all the concessions achieved past and futuristically....continued poor vision and mis-guided judgement will throw U head first into liquidation in the not so short term

No, actually they are looking for ways to increase employee "productivity". That can mean almost anything but that is what has been gathered over the last few days. Basically I think it means employees pay the dues for management's inability to restructure the airline into a profitable venture. Nothing new here. Still, we sit here with 3 narrow body fleet types and 2 wide body fleet types and all the related support structure vs. WN's B-737.

I feel like a sitting duck.

A320 Driver

I find it interesting that except for Providence, all the destinations already have low-fare competition out of PHL. If I'm not mistaken ATA flies to MDW, HP to Phoenix and LAS, FL to Orlando and Tampa.

Southwest is not only expanding to PHL, but they are expanding in jets and employees alike.

U expanding in PHL....Not really

U expanding in jets....NO

U expanding in growth (employment)...Hell no

For U to curtail anything, especially in PHL would be crackbrained

Ok why not put a couple of Mainline Jets back to MDW and at all 6 cities SWA will serve from PHL why not drop the prices to say like $150 to $199 along with the last minute walk up fare?

Why would US do this? They would be selling seats that they cannot make money on. At those fare levels WN could make money and at worst breakeven.
