US Airways, Delta shares sag on weekend cancellations
Mon Dec 27, 2004 10:19 AM ET
NEW YORK, Dec 27 (Reuters) - Shares of US Airways and Delta Air Lines took a hit on Monday morning after a shortage of workers and technical malfunctions caused thousands of flight cancellations, creating more problems for an industry already worn thin from record-high fuel prices and airfare wars.
Unusually large numbers of US Airways (UAIRQ.OB: Quote, Profile, Research) baggage handlers in Philadelphia and flight attendants in other markets called in sick over the Christmas weekend -- forcing the bankrupt carrier to cancel 29 flights on Sunday, after canceling 300 flights on Friday and Saturday. The sick calls were not organized, union officials said, but affected thousands of passengers on one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
