I think some republicans are starting to realize that you can only cut spending so far. Revenue needs to be increased and even out. The loop holes need to be closed.

There are essentially two ways to approach the debt issue from a non Ron Paul perspective.

You either cut cost(Spending) or raise revenue(Taxes) or a combination thereof.

The preferred way would be to get the economy rolling again which automatically raises revenue. However the worlwide debt bubble & potential for an economic collapse precludes that from happening quick enough to address the looming debt crisis,

Taxation usually stifles growth and increases our uncompetitiveness globally.

Spending cuts done to quickly will hurt the economy as well.

So what's the answer? There really isn't one of those pie in the sky feel good and get re-elected solutions out there. Some ideas.

Now would be the ideal time to "Deregulate" the tax code. Time to streamline from top to bottom. End ALL tax credits of any kind, corporate or personal. Get as close as we can to "If you made X you owe Y" as possible or look at scrapping the income tax altogether and move to a consumption based system with possible exemptions for Food and Shelter. The closer to revenue neutral this plan is the better.

Spending cuts must be broad and take place over not less then three years. Our Empire around the world must be scaled back and our social safety net repaired. Bottom line Government will have to be just like its citizens. Required to do more with less.

Once we get what I'll call "The format for growth" we can tinker anually with the tax rates and balance the budget going forward. The debt as a percentage of GDP should be no more then 60% giving a cushion of 20% in case of war or natural disaster.
