TLV

Busdriver how does it really work ? I'd be interested to know.

Hope all is well with you & happy thanksgiving.

There's a standard arrival (almost a straight line) to the shore, then a standard traffic pattern to a landing. The only thing different is that you have to radio ahead to a security clearance frequency by 200 miles out that you are coming. There is nothing convoluted about the routing, at least coming in from the west (which is all we ever do.) It's much easier than many of the European airports from a pilot point of view.

Happy Thanksgiving to you, too.

According to the press (which may not reflect reality), there have been some changes to the flight paths:

And flight patterns for flights to and from Tel Aviv's Ben-Gurion International Airport have been shifted north to free up air space for Israel's air force operating in Gaza, said one official in the aviation industry.

But nothing about zigzagging back and forth or other evasive action.

as far as i know they usually get zigzagg thru israel friendly territory areas or over the med sea thats just from what i have read in the past in a usairways mag when they had the tlv thing in it

It seems like the only sort of routing issue would be to avoid the airspace between Turkey and Cyprus (if that's even still a problem) although it looks like the flights usually pass south of there to begin with. I don't think there are any countries on the northern side of the Mediterranean that are openly hostile towards or would prohibit in any way an aircraft from flying to/from Israel.

Thanks a lot, that clears things up. I'm retired now but if you get back to Clt & have some time give me a "heads up".

Since I haven't been to TLV since the most recent hostilities commenced, they may have changed the flight patterns as the newspaper article says. It's interesting that the article says foreign carriers are getting their crews right out of TLV without any overnight layovers. I guess it's unsafe for them, but perfectly safe for US crews despite the middle-of-the-night evacuations to bomb shelters. And, I do believe the crews of at least one other US carrier do not stay in central TelAviv where these rockets are aimed.

It looks like Iron Dome is doing a great job knocking the Hamas rockets out of the air. But the system is not 100% effective. Let's just hope the one that gets through lands itself about 50 yards offshore from the layover hotel with a big splash and no damage or loss of life. Maybe THEN Tempe may determine that the TLV crews are in danger in that city.

From another message board:

KLM and Air France are stopping and changing crews at Larnaca not to have any crews stay overnight at TLV.

My parents called their friend who lives in downtown Tel Aviv yesterday, in walking distance to the beach. She opened the window so they could hear the rockets. A bit too close for comfort, IMO. I went to school in Israel for 6 months, and have spent time there on other visits, and I NEVER felt unsafe (even when being hit on by Israeli men with bad teeth looking for a fast track to their green card).........but I would not go there right now unless I had to.

I am Catholic and would go over there now to assist Israel. They are demonstrating remarkable restraint. Certainly Mossad is taking action (they just don't broadcast their successes) and again I wonder where are the Arab leaders who will denounce this action by Hamas?

You can bet if the roles were reversed you'd have every Arab (and Iran) yelling from the rooftops to denounce Israel.

The cowards from Hamas are firing missiles at Israel from populated neighborhoods.
