Well Greggy...Maybe you AA pilots fall apart at SIXTY....but there are a hell of a lot of other pilots that are still going strong. And I bet you are one of those AA pilots that thinks you are the only ones in the sky......Well when it comes to you.... AA does stand for "Arrogant A#%hole..." 🙄 :censored:

Next time you go to church...think about WJWTOY.
 
The pilots that lost a guarantee pension like AA still has are the ones that are now pushing for age 65 reitrements. Up until UA/NW/DL bankruptcies ALPA still pushed for age 60 mandatory retirements.

I wish they had an age 60 rule for A&Ps, as well as a maximum duty time. Those two rules make the supply low and the demand for more pilots high. If pilots could fly till they drop then they would not need as many pilots. That would saturate the supply and drive down wages. What you guys should do is work on evening out the payrates so that you have less at stake in any particular carrier.

Most age 60 pilots don't "fall apart" on their 60th birthday. However, even in their late 50's, more than a few start losing a step, and those numbers become the majority as time progresses. Some slide physically, some mentally, and some do both. One thing is for sure is that it happens to all of us. I flown with Captains with many health problems but were sharp as tacks. I also flown with others in great physical condition, but the aging was evident. One ran marathons, was a vocal supporter of 60+, but had to be babysat when at the controls. He was also dead at 62.

I've also flown jets with two other Captains in their early 60's. One was a menace, totally behind every flight. Another, while a great guy and Captain, couldn't keep up on long duty days and late nights. A common theme is "we can pass checkrides!". Great, a 12pm-2pm sim ride. Move all sim rides to 3-5am after several nights without adequate sleep and 14 hour duty days, then show how great the 60+ group performs.

As for other airlines "seeing the light" versus AA pilots. USAir (pre-HP) had the most decimation of retirement of any US carrier and a very senior pilot group, yet the majority still voted to keep age 60 as the limit. As for foreign carriers, stop including every crappy third world carrier as a reference point in age 60 debates, and look at BA, Air France and Lufthansa. All of them were recently retired Captains at age 55 (BA may have gone to 60). Lufthansa has a age 55 rule, and one Captain said most retire in their early 50's.

A small group of "squeaky wheels" are driving the change, most of the majority that is against the change is too busy flying their arses off to spend their free time defending the staus quo.
 
And do any of those carriers you mention as being the benchmark (BA, LH, and AF) happen to have mandatory retirement ages in their labor contracts? Perhaps you can have APA put that into the upcoming contract...

LH Captain said Germany had an age 55 limit. Not positive if the others were company or national regs.

Your idea is unworkable. For one, I doubt Federal law would permit APA/AA to agree to it. The other problem is we know AMR will drag out our contract for as long as possible. Retroactively retiring guys who are 62 with an age 65 FAA change isn't going to work if APA/AA finally agree on a contract with age 60.

The "Age 31" rule is in place because of the mandatory Age 56 retirement age for controllers. You must be under the age of 31 to begine an Air Traffic Controller career.

Sounds like some career F/O bitching about never smelling the left seat before the age sixty clock strikes midnight...

Excuss me but that would not be one of my goals in this life..My tower does not have wings on it anymore :up:..but it sure sounds like you have been there.
