Even if you learn to be proficient flying it it would take even more time learning how to effectively use it in combat.  You also have to wonder who is going to maintain the thing.  They could have the best fighter pilot in the world but if it's sitting on the ground broke it's of little use.

Wonder if Saddam's pilots are conscripts or willing instructors. I have a sneaking suspicion sooner or later Syria and some other Arab nations are found to be providing covert aid. Something like ' here take this, leave us alone '.Russian help too......helps destabilize the entire region which is against US doctrine and hurts us.

ISIS are Sunni's which is what Hussein was. Allen West has a take on this:

Just last week there were reports of ISIS fighters getting fighter aircraft training. Now, of course these are very old MiG platforms, but these aircraft aren’t intended to fly traditional bomber or air-to-air missions. Don’t forget what terrorists learned to do with civilian airliners heavy with fuel on 9-11. My assessment is that “IF” ISIS is indeed training fighters to fly fighter aircraft, they will be heavily loaded with ordnance for one purpose — the Islamic kamikaze. And the target would be our U.S. embassy in Baghdad.

Possibly a marriage of convenience.  Given the Iraqi Air Force has had very little flying time the past twenty years their skills are a bit rusty.  With the Syrians now claiming that they destroyed two of them ISIS may well be out of flyable jets.  I'm sure a lot of US fighter pilots are disappointed about that, if true.

It's in Russia's best interest for a stable Syria.  A stable Syria with Assad in charge of course.  If he loses power Russia will loose port privileges

Good luck with that.  Pilots of limited skills finding something like the US Embassy in Baghdad is rather unlikely.  Especially witht he skies crawling with allied aircraft.

Don't think so in the US at least....strafe the noisy neighbor?
Did some weekend work at Willow Run AP in Ypsilanti where they made B-24's during the big one. There was an old tank and bunker on the other side of the field where they sighted in their guns. Make hydrostatic tranny's in the old assy bldg.

Guy named Poberezny somewhere up where that P-51 article is about is a big time restorer.

America's Fighter Pilots imagining ISIS scumbags even getting into war planes:

"They could have the best fighter pilot in the world but.." Point taken on even just maintenance issues alone, but additionally, given that the last USA vs Arab aerial warfare of any note produced an 82 to ZERO kill ratio, there's little worry over the quality of the foe there.

More of longer term concern's the included observation though: "Even if China never sends her into battle, she’s useful for training and learning how carriers work."....With America nowadays intent on suicidally dismembering our own forces, Putin doing his best to return Russia to being a force of empire, and the Chinese having free reign to do as they will, well, there will be interesting times ahead. A carrier battle group's a carrier battle group...even if at first efforts it (soon to be more) doesn't look like much.

A true beauty from a far more elegant age in air travel...and human flight in general, for that matter. 🙂

The US has been operating and building carriers continuously since the 1930's along with a worldwide network to support them.  The Chinese have a carrier that was built in the USSR with a sub-standard propulsion plant, an air wing that has no where near the striking power of a USN CBG.  From the time the keel is laid to it's first deployment seven to eight years will have passed for a USN carrier.  It's going to take the Chinese much longer than that.

I wouldn't make bet on that.

They specialize in stolen technology first and second, didn't a student group recently, accidentally find evidence of contrywide ICBM silos hidden for quite sometime?

Never underestimate your enemy.
