U.S. intercepts Russian bombers off coast of Alaska, California

How long had it been since we ramped down surveillance of Russia? Did we suddenly stop in 2008?

We Russia is there. We know their hardware is unreliable at best. We know their response time.will suck. What benifits is there for sending bombers to their border?

Back in early November 2014, the Intenet was abuzz with talk of a story titled "What frightened the USS Donald Cook so much in the Black Sea?," where it was claimed that an incident in April 2014 "demoralized" the crew of the USS Donald Cook, when a Russian Sukhoi-24 (SU-24) fighter jet buzzed the the USS Donald Cook, not carrying bombs or missiles, but rendering them completely inoperable with the use of an "electronic warfare device."

As the Russian jet approached the US vessel, the electronic device disabled all radars, control circuits, systems, information transmission, etc. on board the US destroyer. In other words, the all-powerful Aegis system, now hooked up - or about to be - with the defense systems installed on NATO’s most modern ships was shut down, as turning off the TV set with the remote control.

The Russian Su-24 then simulated a missile attack against the USS Donald Cook, which was left literally deaf and blind. As if carrying out a training exercise, the Russian aircraft - unarmed - repeated the same maneuver 12 times before flying away.

Without any reports at all from any MSM source or confirmation from Russia, people waved this away as rumor, speculation or an outright hoax, but in March 2015, Russian News agency Sputnik, which is owned an operated by the Russian government, announced that Russia had unveiled a new "revolutionary electronic warfare system."

Russia's new Richag-AV radar and sonar jamming system can be mounted on helicopters, ships and other military equipment to jam potential adversaries' weapons systems from distances of several hundred kilometers away; it has been hailed by developers as having no analogue anywhere in the world.

It'll be real interesting if one falls out the sky here and has nukes in her belly.

The difference is with a radar cross section of a steel barn we will know the Bear is on it's way.  With the B-2 the only indication the Russian would have is by the mushroom clouds over their cities.

U-2 missions are reconnaissance only.

Russians are flying bombers to probe our reaction.

Only thing US probes them with is RC-135U ELINT aircraft.

Only ten SAC bases remain.

There are  no SAC bases as SAC does not exist anymore. You are also overlooking that we have aircraft flying missions out of Poland or M-1 tanks doing live fire exercises in Lithuania.  I can only imagine the crap storm that would ensue if the Russians were doing the same in Mexico.

Look up the number of bases we have in their neck of the woods then look up how many they have on ours.

No need to immagine. Look what happened with Cuba. Almost started WWIII. Mean while we had misses in Turkey just at Russias back door.

Missed the point.....they in playing with oBama have an in flight incident and go down here with nukes in their belly would make for a tasty international incident.

SAC basically  morphed into Air Force Global Strike Command

No I didn't miss the point.  Do the Russians actually fly their bombers around with live nuclear weapons?  The USAF stopped doing that years ago after some rather nasty incidents.  Give the condition of  the Russian bomber force I have a hard time believing that they do.

BFD

On station in the Indian Ocean

Every week on cue the 1MC would announce the arrival of the Bear, accompanied by the pair of F14's accompanying him, in the traditional and mutual game of "I know where you live..."

We had airborne armed bombers in the air 24/7 on attack routes 'just in case'.  No reason to think Ivan isn't doing the same.  Brit's claim they had anti Trident missiles on board. Be a shame to come all this way and get a launch code and have to turn around and go get bullets.
