I expect his face right now is rather sad.
Two interesting points from their earnings conference call (transcript available at seekingalpha.com) is that UA said the weather impacted them by $200 million, far more than any other airline.
Also, UA for the 2nd quarter has said that the increased competition in China is affecting its Pacific results. If growth of competition in China is really the problem and UA's long-standing near monopoly to China from the US by US carriers is ending, the prospects for a turnaround are slim, esp. since DL seems very focused on growing in China and says their China results are strong while AA is not pulling back on anything even though many of their China flights are underperforming relative to UA.
There are also Chinese carriers as well as Korean and Asiana that compete in the US-China market and that are adding capacity or carrying more and more traffic. The Asiana crash at SFO highlighted just how much China traffic the Korean airlines carry.
those who think that no one cares about the competitive nature of the industry need only look at the earnings call transcript and see how many times professional analysts compared UA's results to AA and DL's.
The notion that competition isn't a major part of the industry is simply a myth. It matters and the people who invest in and analyze airlines know it.
People on here who don't want to see competitive discussions take place clearly don't understand the nature of business.
