UA announces major loss "we lag on revenue"

UAL stock is off more than 9% while the rest of the industry is up to flat. Perhaps this finally gets the board's attention.

How do you go to your board and explain with a straight face a $1B difference between you and your two largest peers?...

I don't think he has a straight face when saying that E!  🙂

I expect his face right now is rather sad.

Two interesting points from their earnings conference call (transcript available at seekingalpha.com) is that UA said the weather impacted them by $200 million, far more than any other airline.

Also, UA for the 2nd quarter has said that the increased competition in China is affecting its Pacific results. If growth of competition in China is really the problem and UA's long-standing near monopoly to China from the US by US carriers is ending, the prospects for a turnaround are slim, esp. since DL seems very focused on growing in China and says their China results are strong while AA is not pulling back on anything even though many of their China flights are underperforming relative to UA.

There are also Chinese carriers as well as Korean and Asiana that compete in the US-China market and that are adding capacity or carrying more and more traffic. The Asiana crash at SFO highlighted just how much China traffic the Korean airlines carry.

those who think that no one cares about the competitive nature of the industry need only look at the earnings call transcript and see how many times professional analysts compared UA's results to AA and DL's.

The notion that competition isn't a major part of the industry is simply a myth. It matters and the people who invest in and analyze airlines know it.

People on here who don't want to see competitive discussions take place clearly don't understand the nature of business.

the calls for a mgmt. shakeup at UAL are likely to only increase

However, at some point, the management team has to be held accountable for performance. United Continental is already two years past the biggest integration milestones, yet it continues to lose ground vis-a-vis every other major airline. It's time for the Board of Directors to step up and replace all of United's top executives and see if a new management team can do better.

Falling behind -- way behind
In early 2012, just over a year after the United-Continental merger closed, the integration process seemed to be in fairly good shape. United reported a solid $1.3 billion pre-tax profit for 2011, driven primarily by a 9.2% unit revenue increase: the best among the legacy carriers.

Since then, United's relative performance within the airline industry has declined rapidly. Last year, United's pre-tax adjusted profit totaled $1.1 billion: down about $200 million from 2011. In the same span of time, Delta Air Lines improved its pre-tax adjusted profit from $1.2 billion to a stunning $2.7 billion. Analysts now expect Delta to earn nearly $4 billion this year before taxes

And another polluted thread with the DL cheerleader.

it is a published article about UA. Go talk to the author. It is ok for you to pull all kinds of stuff and throw it on this website with no connection whatsoever but you can't accept it if someone else does the same.

Go read the UA transcript and see how many times professional analysts compared UA's results to AA and DL.

Word on street is Alan Mulally of Ford has been to Chicago and will take over from Smisek

fresh,
have you heard any other names suggested?

It is hard to believe that UA's mgmt. team will survive intact after the latest quarter and a very tepid for the future compared to other carriers.

B6' latest mgmt. shakeup shows that investors have limited tolerance for repeats of excuses that hurt earnings. IN B6' case it was their operation.

I read just a few days ago that the ua mgmt. team may be replaced rather sooner than later and from some of the comments ive heard is that the mgmt. keeps saying they will do this or do that  but in the end  they take no action..
