If I were to go work for a unionized company and they said that I had to buy a "permit" then later a "book", exactly what are they talking about?

Aren't Unions great ?

Yes they are.

Folks,

One must remember that were it not for those who have gone before we would not have a a large Middle Class like we do today.

The Molly Maguires
Mother Jones
Sarah Ogan Gunning
Florence Reece
John L Sullivan
The Matewan Massacre
Homestead Mill
The Battle of Logan Mountain

All of these events and people helped shape and mold our society and to deny the value of organized labor is to ignore history.

Great post, Bob.

Allow me to add Haymarket, and the Haymarket Eight to your list:

August Spies, Albert Parsons, Samuel Fielden, George Engel, Adolph Fischer, Louis Lingg, Oscar Neebe and Michael Schwab.

I've no love for what modern day unions have become.

Labor should be the natural check and balance to capitalism run amok, not some drone in Washington whose primary qualification is that they're "connected" to those currently in power.

Your first statement is more true today then at anytime in history. They are no longer the check and balance to capitalism run amok, but rather a corrupt Washington-influenced (or influencer) machine who no longer puts the middle class workers needs above their own.

Unions of today have become corporate enterprises concerned more with profit than member concerns.
I cite the recent endorsement of the Obama campaign by UMWA.
Obama is on record to tax coal fired electricity production out of existence.
And the UMWA membership voted for these clowns....
There are more examples if you look.
