Union WALKOUT cripples port of Los Angeles and Long Beach !

I know you have heard of union solidarity. I also know I don't need to explain that a large group of union workers exist in and around the gulf coast. They are not like the airline unions.

You just saw a perfect example of union how solidarity can work with the dock workers standing up for the clerical by not crossing the picket line.

You used to be a union rep and here you are dancing on the grave of the fallen like us. We should be cheering a win for the middle class union workers here. Not everyone has to suffer the fate that you and I have.

Where am I dancing on the grave? Show me....

I was interested in the fact that someone intimated petro workers would do cargo off loading. I found that interesting as logistically I don't think they are set up for it as a cargo facility without some major immediate changes.

Too bad the IAM didn't back up AMFA at NW...................."Union Solidarity, Pffft !
How can people like you, stick your chest out and denounce people who don't believe unions have all the answers, when one union doesn't mind throwing the other, under the bus !

You mean like the Baker Union at Hostess?

I did not say they would load/offload cargo. I intimated that there are many union workers in and around those ports, and they would show solidarity and put pressure on any attempt to go non-union in those ports. EOleson keeps talking about the southern states being hubs of non-union workers. That is true everywhere except the plants in and around the ports.

The biggest place in Houston where almost all petro and rig workers get their safety training is a labor council.

Since your density knows no bounds, I have repeated my post with the pertinent sections above. Read it a little more slowly this time. Notice where I said not all have to have it end like mine did. Mine was a quick end. The USAir folks was death by a thousand cuts. A least I still have a 16+ year pension coming to me from NWA/DAL.

I have already said that the IAMAW was wrong in what they did. Many times as a matter of fact. (There is no sense in rehashing that yet again here.)

That is why it is very refreshing to see union solidarity. That is the way it used to be with all unions. They did not fight amongst themselves and step on each other.

The key difference that some of you are forgetting is that the docks aren't closed shop in the Gulf states as they are in Kalifornia.

Key difference, and a huge reduction in the ability to intimidate co-workers, something Bears prides the ILWU on being able to do.

Since my density knows no bounds, your saying if I went to work for say, UA and was "Forced" to join the IAM, in order to obtain employment and we all know the IAM sucks and doesn't mind throwing others under the bus, that it's ok to be forced to join their union....................correct?

So all these gulf area union dock workers probably have verbage in their contracts where supporting the left coasties in a job action would in effect be a wildcat action and cause bad ju ju for there locals/members.

Definitely refreshing, definitely how it used to be, and definitely how it needs to be today and tomorrow...

For those dwindling seven percent that tries to dictate to the other 93%.

Agree!
If unions didn't start giving up union principles in contracts (No Strike/Must Cross Picket Lines clauses) and acted like unions, they may have gained respect instead of disdain. I don't see how any union can fix this now.

But who got the cajunes to get arrested and go to jail over a 'union thang' these days?
I saw some chicken chit stuff but who got big enough balls to defy the courts these days?
No many...if that.

Yep, not many. Certainly not enough to make a difference.
I would have, but I would have probably been 1% of the membership.
In hindsight, glad it never happened as falling on my sword for people that don't care would have been catastrophic for me.
Unions will never be what they once were.

With my deepest regrets......I have to totally agree.

Jesus Christ Eric.
What part of that link that I DEDICATED to YOU (about the famous case of the Charleston SC-5) did you NOT UNDERSTAND ?
There is NO GREATER non-Union state in the U S than South Carolina.

I REPEAT,............NO/NONE/ZERO/NADA...container is On/Off loaded in ANY US Port other than by the ILA (Maine to Brownsville Texas) or the OUTSTANDING West coast Union (San Diego to Alaska, including Canadian-Pacific ports) the International Longshoreman Warehouse Union..ILWU !

Despite many Unions self destructing, these guys (ILWU) ..DO...NOT...'PLAY' !
In other words, if you 'lock horns' with them, You LOSE, plain and simple.

Many a Labor professor at numerous University's have cited to thier students the Immence POWER these guys have(just like in the days of Marlon Brando's "ON-THE-WATERFRONT")
And IF you truly read the 'Charleston-5' case, though it took a year and a half, the ILA had World wide support from fellow Longshore Unions...NOT to work any Ships that contained cargo from Charleston SC, (which is a HUGE port), INCLUDING Charleston Cargo that may have been (say) trucked up to Norfolk VA. !

As I've said before,..A 42' fully loaded (to capacity) container...DROPPED from the top level of a Mammoth Super Freighter, sitting at berth at HIGH TIDE.....makes a GOD AWFUL..Sickening Sound ! : )

Did I leave ANYTHING out ERIC ?????????

Bears, you've made it perfectly clear that sabotage, thuggery, violence and intimidation are the only, true power that a union like the ILWU has.

And yet, you wonder why it is a shrinking 7%.
