US Airways and LGA

Are you guys still the largest carrier at LGA? Is anyone aware of the proposal to limit the number of flights at the airport by years end by requiring carriers to use larger planes?
 
In terms of passengers, I believe US Airways is #3 behind DL and AA. With US Express, may be #1 or #2 in operations.
 
We sold our soul to the devil on the LGA for EWR debacle with CAL YEARS ago. LGA is now the least desirable airport and most difficult to get to unless cabbing it. EWR is preferred airport with a twenty minute train ride from Manhattan.

I don't know a single business traveller who thinks that EWR is preferable to LGA. LGA is a short cab ride to anywhere in Manhattan. EWR is a short train ride to Penn Station, followed by a wait for a cab and then a cab ride to the destination. Huge difference.

So businessmen are the only travellers out there? Thats all good, but I would love to see the numbers profit wise between CAL's EWR hub and our "regional jet" minihub at LGA. We are talking about a population base that goes beyond the biz traveller...millions of westside Manhattanites as well as New Jersey residents make EWR a money maker AND those same biz travellers can't fly to the west coast, Europe, or S America out of LGA.

I'm not saying that there isn't a NJ market. It's huge and CAL has done a good job exploiting it. But for Manhattan travel (which is what you discuss in your original post), LGA is clearly preferred.

I guess all I am saying is that we limited ourselves to the kind of traveling by making LGA our preferred airport. Although we DO have alot of biz travellers that prefer LGA and yes, Manhattanites on the East side CAN take a quick cab to LGA..was always envious of those folks as I lived on the west side...we gave CAL the ability to hub CAL and flood the local market with transcon, European, South American and Asia flights. Had we played it right, EWR could had been our PHL with millions more of local traffic.

Tech, I can tell the last time you used EWR. You can take a Train Direct into the EWR Monorail Station which brings you right to the Terminals. So a Cab ride, thats about THREE Years Ago. And YES, EWR offers many many more Destinations then LGA. Gordon knew what EWR was and what it could be, that's why U Mangement sold out EWR for LGA. Yet another Great Decision by U Management.

No. I've done it quite recently. I'm talking about Penn Station in NY. I will agree that if you are going to the west side within walking distance of Penn Station that it is now much easier to fly in/out of EWR. But for the rest of Manhattan, LGA is almost always more convenient.

As for the past "Great Decision," can someone enlighten me on exactly what happened. I thought that CAL got its presence in EWR by absorbing the bankrupt operations of PeoplExpress, which included the C Concourse and a lot of very old 737s. How did U make that happen? Or am I missing something here?
 
LGA gas air traffic control problems simply due to the volume of takeoffs and landings. For example, if my memory serves me correctly, between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. the airport can support about 45 takeoff and landings, but the airlines have scheduled 33% more with 60 takeoff and landings.

In regard to yield, LGA Customer Service personnel recently told me that LGA has high yields and JFK very poor yields, which is part of the reason JetBlue is such a low RASM carrier.

LGA station operations are superior and the station regularly ranks at or near the top of US Airways operational statistics.

In addition, Doug Parker recently indicated the Shuttle is profitable.

Regardless of what you think of her, Loretta Bove does a good job as the Managing Director, she is very highly thought of by key personnel in Tempe, and US Airways' LGA operational statistics speak for them self.

Also, aren't LGA slots very expensive and hard to get? Doesn't that mean that they are highly sought after?
