US AIRWAYS PROPOSES FIRST-EVER NONSTOP SERVICE BETWEEN PENSACOLA, FLA. AND WASHINGTON, D.C.
Airline requests DOT permission to link communities with year-round service

TEMPE, Ariz., Jan. 31, 2007 - In a move designed to increase competition and give customers more choices in air travel, US Airways (NYSE: LCC) has filed an application with the Department of Transportation (DOT) to begin nonstop, year-round service between Pensacola, Fla. and Washington, D.C.

Like many Florida markets, air travel demand to Pensacola is seasonal in nature; however, the regional population of more than 400,000 is underserved. US Airways' plan to alternate aircraft types would allow the airline to maintain daily service throughout the year. During winter season, Embraer 170 aircraft would operate the route, while the slightly larger Embraer 175 would operate summer service.

"US Airways' nonstop service between Washington, D.C. and Pensacola would have a number of benefits to both customers and local business communities," said C.A. Howlett, senior vice president of public affairs for the airline. "Customers in the Gulf Coast region would enjoy nonstop access to our Nation's Capital."

If approved, the new service would complement existing US Airways service between Pensacola and Charlotte.

US Airways is the fifth largest domestic airline employing nearly 35,000 aviation professionals worldwide. US Airways, US Airways Shuttle and US Airways Express operate approximately 3,800 flights per day and serve more than 230 communities in the U.S., Canada, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America. The new US Airways -- the product of a merger between America West and US Airways in September 2005 -- is a member of the Star Alliance, which provides connections for our customers to 841 destinations in 157 countries worldwide. This press release and additional information on US Airways can be found at www.usairways.com.

Good news for US, I hope they get it. They'll be going up against DLs DCA-LIT, FLs DCA-ATL, and TZs DCA-MDW bids. IMHO, it will probably come down to either LIT or PNS.

also against YX's MKE-DCA.

I also think it will be PNS vs LIT. Both are not currently served by DCA.

1. DL wants LIT with a CRJ vs E170/175 in PNS
2. LIT is served by WN at BWI. PNS is not served by IAD or BWI.

Just some new Express service operated by a contracted carrier...Nothing to get excited about. When we start to see some new MAINLINE service, that will be something to get excited about... :(

IF it does well it could be operated by mainline. In the filiing US specifically states that the 190, which is mainline, could serve the route based on performance.

DCA SRQ is getting mainline on Saturdays in mid February and might have a 190 or 175 in the future.

The 190 could have been on this route sooner but the Embraer delivery delays have postponed plans by several months.

Yes, that would be nice, but it has been a very long time since the trend has gone in that direction. Express operated RJ's have taken over countless markets and stations that were served by Mainline for years. I would imagine that the company would prefer to run hourly RJ's over a few Mainline flights a day. The last thing that they want to do is to staff a station with their own employees....

Good point. It truly is a shame. Not that i'd get overly excited if it was mainline, but growth is growth...
